ARLINGTON, Texas –Â
Abby Gentry produced two extra-base hits and
Grace Proctor completed another solid pitching appearance for South Dakota State softball on Sunday, but a four-run first inning for Columbia proved to be enough in a 4-2 victory over the Jackrabbits at Allan Saxe Field.Â
Â
The Lions' lineup drew a walk and hit by pitch to begin the bottom of the first inning. A two-out, two-run single put Columbia ahead 2-0. Savanna Messner then hit a two-run home run to put the Lions on top, 4-0.Â
Â
Proctor came on in relief for the Jackrabbits and kept SDSU in striking distance. Columbia would strand 10 runners on base over the course of the game, but Proctor worked out of multiple jams to complete a scoreless showing in the circle.Â
Â
The SDSU freshman finished her fourth appearance of the season by throwing 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Proctor gave up five hits, including three hit batters and two walks, but limited the damage by not allowing a run.Â
Â
Her effort allowed the Jackrabbit lineup to hang in the ballgame. Gentry ended a no-hit bid in the fourth inning with a solo home run.Â
Â
The score was 4-1 entering the seventh as Lions starter Mads Lawson was cruising having allowed just one hit. Gentry hit a one-out double and eventually was plated on an RBI single by
Alivya Bollen. That was all the Jacks could muster as Lawson wrapped up a complete-game performance. She struck out seven batters while walking just one.
Â
South Dakota State fell to 15-17 overall on the season following its finale at the Maverick Invitational.
