VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota State put together several scoring opportunities late in its Interstate Series meeting and Summit League opener at South Dakota on Thursday, Sept. 24, but couldn't find the back of the net as the Jackrabbits and Coyotes closed out regulation with a scoreless draw at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.

Both teams now stand at 0-0-1 to open the conference slate which spans 10 games. The Jackrabbits are 5-2-2 overall while the Yotes sit at 3-3-3.

The Jackrabbits first scoring chance came in the 12th minute as a right footed shot by Emma Brezenski was swatted away from diving USD goalkeeper Cambell Fischer. SDSU recorded two more shots before another attempt on goal. The 38th minute saw SDSU's Ellie Gusman race into the box and try to push a shot past the keeper, but her attempt was saved.

Deizha Lyn Jacinto produced a shot on goal late in the first half before the two sides went into the halftime break at 0-0.

South Dakota State registered six shots in the opening 10 minutes of the second half but couldn't find a tally. A 63rd minute foul just outside the box gave the Jackrabbits great positioning for a set play, but SDSU couldn't capitalize.

The Jackrabbits continued to push and nearly found the game-winner on multiple occasions. A deep kick from defender Lauren Eckerle in the 71st minute wasn't handled initially by USD's Fischer, but she was able to gain possession of the ball just as Adrianne Agbayani was charging in to cause a deflection. An 80th minute shot by SDSU's Jenna Maloy was saved over the crossbar.

The Jacks pressed into the final minute. Senior Katelyn Beulke had possession of the ball on the left side of the box with a defender at her side, but her left-footed strike was saved to put the finishing touches on the scoreless tie.

South Dakota State outshot South Dakota by a 17-14 margin, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. SDSU had seven corner kicks compared to USD's four opportunities. Fischer had six saves for the Coyotes while South Dakota State goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart made three saves.

SDSU's back line of Lauren Eckerle, Sophia Emerson and Gentry Williams each played 90 minutes in the match. Maloy, Gusman, Beulke and Hannah Langstaff all played over 70 minutes. Brezenski recorded a team-high six shots followed by Mia Bosch's four. Brianna Finnegan played a reserve-high 35 minutes.

South Dakota State is now 2-1-4 in its last seven meetings versus South Dakota.
The Jackrabbits are 1-1-2 in their last four visits to Vermillion.

South Dakota State returns to competition on Sunday when the Jackrabbits host North Dakota at Fishback Soccer Park. The 1 p.m. match is SDSU's annual GOALD game. The GOALD game is in conjunction with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation in supporting a cure for childhood cancer. Northwestern Mutual will be providing all fans that attend Sunday's GOALD match between SDSU and North Dakota free tickets.
