Abby Oakland is in her second season as the Jackrabbits’ director of basketball operations.
Oakland coordinates the team’s travel, life skills and scheduling, while assisting with recruiting, scouting, overseeing the team’s individual camps and working with the sports information and marketing/promotion offices.
The Fulda, Minn., native comes to SDSU after spending three seasons as an assistant coach with Southwest Minnesota State where she helped with recruiting, player development, alumni relations and summer camps.
Prior to SMSU, Oakland spent the 2012-13 season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Bemidji State, helping lead the Beavers to an 11-16 record. She also recruited and signed the 2015 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Freshman of the Year.
Oakland spent the 2011-12 season as the assistant women’s basketball coach and head junior varsity coach at Central College in Pella, Iowa. She began her coaching career in 2009, spending two seasons (2009-11) as a graduate assistant at Northern State.
Oakland competed on both the women’s basketball and golf teams at SMSU (2005-09), earning Academic All-NSIC honors three times in both sports.
On the court, she played in 114 games, starting 103, and scored 689 points and dished 330 assists, which ranked seventh in school history. Oakland finished her career shooting a school-record 85.6 percent (125 of 146) from the free-throw line, while her 96 career 3-pointers tied for ninth in program history.
On the golf course, Oakland helped lead SMSU to two NCAA Tournament appearances, while earning All-NSIC honors three times. She finished her career with an 82.6 stroke average, ranking eighth in program history.
Oakland is a 2009 graduate of SMSU with a degree in sports management. She earned a master’s degree in education from Northern State in 2011.
