A.J. Schopp joined the Jackrabbit wrestling program in the summer of 2015 as an assistant coach.
During the 2015-16 season, Schopp helped lead South Dakota State to a 14-6 dual record that included a school-record 12 consecutive victories. The Jackrabbits cracked the team top-25 rankings for the first time at the Division I level in February, then sent a program-best five wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Championships a month later. SDSU also turned in a fourth-place finish at the 2016 Big 12 Conference Wrestling Championship, highlighted by three individual runner-up finishes.
Schopp completed a standout wrestling career at Edinboro University (Pa.), where he was a four-time NCAA qualifier and three-time All-American. He finished fourth at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships as both a sophomore and junior before placing third in the 133-pound division at the 2015 national meet. He compiled a 133-17 career record with 67 pins, including a 26-3 mark with 16 falls as a senior.
As a team, Edinboro posted a pair of top-five finishes in the team standings at the Division I Championships, including a third-place showing in 2015.
