South Dakota State's frontcourt starters combined for 61 points as the Jackrabbit women's basketball team rolled past San Jose State (Calif.) 98-63 Wednesday night at Frost Arena.
SDSU improved to 9-3 overall, including 6-0 at home this season. The Spartans remained winless at 0-12.
Megan Vogel led the scoring parade with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. Sophomore forward Jennifer Warkenthien turned in a career-high 20 points on 8-of-10 field goal shooting and junior center Courtney Grimsrud established a career high for the second straight game with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
Andrea Verdegan also reached double figures with 10 points, while tying a season high with six assists.
The Jackrabbits raced out to an 18-1 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Warkenthien scored eight points in the early run, including six on a pair of three-pointers. San Jose State closed to within 11 at 23-12 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half before another Jackrabbit barrage of three-pointers extended the lead to as much as 31 in the first half.
SDSU led 54-23 at halftime, making 8-of-12 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. The Jackrabbits' long-range shooting prowess came after their streak of 277 games with a three-pointer ended Sunday in a loss at Missouri.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Jackrabbits pushed the lead to 43 at 75-32 on a traditional three-point play by Vogel at the 11:45 mark. San Jose State would get no closer than 31 points in the closing minute.
Natalie White led the Spartans with 20 points, making 4-of-11 three-point attempts. Brittany Powell contributed 13 points.
All 12 players to see action for the Jackrabbits scored at least one point in the game.
SDSU, which shot 65.6 percent from the field in the first half, cooled off in the second half but managed to finish the night 33-of-64 floor, 51.6 percent.
The Jackrabbits ended up 9-of-23 on three-pointers, 39 percent, and 23-of-32 at the line, 71.9 percent.
Ashlea Muckenhirn also dished out a career-best six assists for the Jackrabbits.
San Jose State improved its shooting in the second half to finish 24-of-67, 35.8 percent, including 6-of-20 from long range. At the stripe, the Spartans converted 9-of-13 attempts for 69.2 percent.
SDSU dominated the boards, pulling down a season-best 52 rebounds, compared to 28 by the Spartans. Vogel and Grimsrud each collected seven rebounds. Kalia Williams posted a team-high six rebounds for SJSU.
South Dakota State returns to action Dec. 28 at Alabama. San Jose State travels to Pacific (Calif.) on Dec. 27.
