CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. ? Southeast Missouri State scored in its last at-bat in both games of a doubleheader, sweeping South Dakota State in college baseball action Sunday afternoon.
The Redhawks won Game 1, 7-4, on a three-run walk-off home run by Matt Wulfers, then scored on a balk to win the nitecap, 1-0, in eight innings. The ending to Game 2 overshadowed a strong pitching performance by SDSU starter
Caleb Thielbar, who held SEMO hitless through the first seven innings.
SEMO improved to 4-2, while SDSU dropped to 4-5.
In the opener, The Jackrabbits took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as
Korby Mintken singled, advanced to second base on a balk and came around to score on an error.
SEMO rallied for three runs off Jackrabbit starter
Matt Bowman in the home half of the first on a run-scoring double by Matt Wagner and RBI base hits by Phillip Riley and Jim Klocke.
SDSU countered with a three-run third.
Jake Rogers plated Mintken, who singled to lead off the inning, with a double to the left-center gap.
Craig Parry hit an opposite field double to left to score Rogers and Parry later scored on a
Chris Iverson single.
Bowman held the Redhawks in check until the fifth, when SDSU committed two errors in the inning to all SEMO to tie the game at 4-all.
The game remained knotted at four until the bottom of the seventh.
Jake Angier came on in relief of Bowman and retired the only hitter he faced.
Dalton Decker then allowed a base hit to Asif Shah, but retired the next hitter on a groundout. With two outs, Riley extended the inning with a base hit to center field, moving Wagner to third. Wulfers then stepped to the plate and ended the game with one swing, hitting his first home run of the season.
Josh Parham earned the victory in relief after retiring the only hitter he faced. Josh Syberg worked the first 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and eight hits, while striking out four and walking none.
Bowman pitched the first six innings for SDSU. He scattered six hits, walked two and struck out one.
Minkten was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Jackrabbits. Iverson ended the game 2-for-3.
In Game 2, Shah struck out eight and limited SDSU to just three hits as the Redhawks won a pitchers' duel. Shah retired 17 straight Jackrabbit batters before
Chris Iverson singled to open the eighth inning.
Thielbar, who dropped to 0-2 this season, walked three but did not allow a hit until Wulfers led off the eighth with a double down the left-field line. After an intentional walk to Dustin Pritchett, Thielbar coaxed Klocke into a flyout to center field.
Kirby Morsching then came on in relief. He walked Daryl Graham to load the bases, but induced a ground ball off the bat of Brent Lawson that retired Wulfers at the plate. With Nick Harris batting, Morsching was called for a balk as Pritchett broke from third base, forcing in the lone run of the game.
SDSU's best chance to score came in the top of the first, when Mintken doubled and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. With no one out and runners at the corners,
Nick Adams was thrown out at second trying to steal second. Rogers then popped out to third and Parry struck out to end the threat.
Both teams left three runners on in the game.
The Jackrabbits will open their Spring Break trip Friday, opening a three-game series at Indiana State. SDSU also will play at Tennessee-Martin and Murray State (Ky.).
