OREM, Utah ? The South Dakota State University baseball team showed little signs of rust as the Jackrabbits, playing for the first time in 12 days, opened a three-game series at Utah Valley State Friday night with a 17-3 victory.
The Jackrabbits played errorless defense, tied a season high with four home runs, including a pair by catcher Tony Martin, and received a complete-game effort from senior Matt Bowman to even their record at 11-11. UVSC dropped to 7-16.
SDSU never trailed as it scored five runs in the top of the first inning against Wolverine starter Jace Brinkerhoff. Craig Parry drove in Korby Mintken with the first run on a double. Parry later scored on a passed ball and Martin capped the rally with a three-run homer, his first round-tripper of the season.
Tim Hanigan drove in the next two Jackrabbit runs with a sacrifice fly in the third inning and a solo home run to lead off the sixth.
The Jackrabbits tacked on two more runs in the seventh as Parry scored on a wild pitch and Martin delivered a sacrifice fly that plated Tyson Fisher for the third time in the game. SDSU made it 10-1 in the eighth as Parry hit his team-leading 10th double of the season to score Jake Rogers.
SDSU ended the scoring in the ninth, sending 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run outburst. The first three runs scored on back-to-back home runs as Martin hit his second of the game, a two-run shot to left, and Cal Lewis followed with a solo shot to put him in a tie for the team lead with five home runs. The first seven Jackrabbit batters of the inning hit safely, including Mintken and Rogers, who delivered run-scoring singles. Fisher added an RBI double later in the frame for the team's eighth hit of the inning.
The Jackrabbits out-hit UVSC, 19-7, with Parry and Lewis each tallying three hits. Martin ended the game 2-for-3 with six RBI as he was one of six SDSU players with two hits.
Austin Heaps was 3-for-4 to lead UVSC at the plate, while Thomas was 2-for-4.
