OREM, Utah -- South dakota State's baseball team split a doubleheader with Utah Valley State Saturday, taking game one 10-9 before dropping game two 7-5 at Wolverine Stadium in Orem, Utah.
SDSU is 12-12, Utah Valley State is 8-17.
In game one, SDSU took a 10-0 lead in the fourth and held off a late rally by the Wolverines to claim a 10-9 win.
The Jackrabbits led 3-0 when they put up a seven spot in the fourth inning, apparently breaking the game open. UVSC responded by scoring in each of the final six frames, putting the winning runs on base in the ninth. Jacob Kougl enduced a double play groundout to preserve the win.
SDSU pounded out 13 hits, 12 singles, with every starter getting at least one hit.
Matt Zabel went 3-for-5 while Korby Mintken and Tim Hanigan each had two. SDSU's only extra-base hit was a three-run homer by Cal Lewis that put the Jacks ahead 10-0.
Caleb Thielbar earned his third win, allowing four runs and seven hits in 5.2 innings. Kougl picked up the save, his seventh in eight tries.
In the nightcap, it was defense that did in the Jacks. SDSU committed five errors, leading to four unearned runs in a 7-5 defeat.
The Wolverines broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run fourth that was aided by three Jackrabbit errors. Utah Valley State thwarted rallies in the seventh and eighth to hold off SDSU and take the series finale.
SDSU lost despite outhitting UVSC 13-7. Jake Rogers and Tyson Fisher led the way with three hits apiece. Rogers drove in three, including a two-run homer, while Fisher had a run-scoring double and an RBI single. Cal Lewis and Matt Zabel added two hits for SDSU.
Kirby Morsching was charged with the loss, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Mike Robinson hurled four innings of perfect relief, striking out three.
SDSU will open the home portion of its scheduled this week. First, the Jacks will host Dakota Wesleyan for a midweek game, time and date will be announced tomorrow. Then next weekend SDSU will entertain North Dakota State for a four-game set beginning Friday at Bob Shelden Field.
