KISSIMMEE, Fla. ? South Dakota State junior Kim Westendorf took a no-hitter into the fifth inning Thursday with the eight runs she needed to end the game after five innings, and even though the gave up a one-out single, Westendorf and the Jackrabbits still started the day with an 8-0 win over future Mid-Continent Conference foe IPFW.
Just two-thirds of an inning away from a five-inning no-hitter, the Mastodon's Jill Price broke it up with an infield single.
Westendorf walked the next batter, but sat down the following two batters in order to preserve her complete game shutout and the Jacks sixth win of the season.
Westendorf struck out four and walked three in earning her third win of the season.
As for the offense, Kiley Schwedhelm singled home Brooke Postma and Denise Leon in the first to give the Jacks and early 2-0 lead.
They added another run in the third, when Jessica Vineyard parlayed a walk, two wild pitches, an Amanda Fedson fielder's choice and a throwing error into the Jacks third unearned run of the game.
The earned runs started coming in the third inning. Brooke Postma drew a leadoff walk, and then stole second to get into scoring position.
Samantha Heinzman doubled Postma home on the next at bat to give the Jacks a 4-0 lead.
After a pitching change, Steph Kuhl belted the first of her two doubles in to left center field scoring Heinzman from second to put the Jacks up 5-0.
Postma started the fifth inning the same way she started the third, with a walk and a stolen base, her 8th in as many tries this season and 22nd straight in as many tries in her career.
Postma scored the Jacks sixth run when Heinzman singled her home on the next at bat.
Heinzman quickly stole second and third base, before scoring on Kuhl's second double of the day.
With the Jacks now up 7-0, Schwedhelm knocked in the final run needed to shorten the game to five innings, her double through the left side scored Kuhl to give SDSU an 8-0 lead.
The Jacks improved to 6-7 on the season with the win.
In the second game of the day, SDSU improved to 7-7 on the season with a 12-3 win over Holy Cross (Mass.).
The Jacks fell behind by one after a half inning, but plated three runs in the bottom of the first on singles by Samthana Heinzman, Steph Kuhl and Amanda Fedson to take a 3-1 lead.
The offense kept coming in the second, highlighted by Kuhl, who put herself in first place on the career home runs list at SDSU with her 21st career dinger. Her three-run bomb put the Jacks up 6-1.
SDSU scored four more runs in the inning and six more for the game.
Jenna Marston went the distance to improve to 4-1 on the season. Marston gave up five hits, three runs, one earned, while striking out six and walking none.
