Women's golf moves up to place 12th in Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The South Dakota State women's golf team moved up two spots during Sunday's final round to finish 12^th at the Hawkeye Invitational, which was played at the par-72, 6,202-yard Finkbine Golf Course.

The Jackrabbits, who entered the day in 14^th place, posted their low score of the tournament -- 318 -- to finish with a 965 (328-319-318) total.

Sophomore Hillary Gerster (Andover, Minn.) led the Jacks, tying for 14^th. She followed up rounds of 74 and 83 with a final-round, 5-over-par 77, giving her a 234 total.

Sydney Sturdevant, a sophomore from Sioux Falls, ended up tied for 57^th at 246 (91-75-80).

A pair of freshmen -- Rebecca Swords (Rosemount, Minn.) and Brittany Hanten (Goodwin) -- tied for 61^st and 65^th, respectively. Swords closed with a 78 to finish at 247 (85-84-78), while Hanten finished at 248 (84-79-85).

Sophomore Whitney Schrader (Marshalltown, Iowa) and senior Amanda Rosol (Fairmont, Minn.), who was competing as an individual, were among four players tied for 65^th at 250. Schrader posted scores of 85, 82 and 83, and Rosol carded 88, 82 and 80.

Ball State, tied for first with Iowa entering the day, went on to win the event. The Cardinals slipped past the host Hawkeyes with a final-round 309, giving them a 921 (309-303-309) total. Iowa finished at 926 (306-306-314).

Individually, Drake's Olivia Lansing protected her second-round lead and won by three. She had a 6-over 222 (71-76-75) total. Longwood's Mary Carmody moved from a tie for sixth into second place at 225 (77-75-73).

Fifteen teams and 87 individuals competed in the event.

The Jacks are back in action next Monday and Tuesday at the Aztec Fall Classic (San Diego State) in San Diego.
