AMES, Iowa ? The longest-standing indoor track and field record at South Dakota State University was smashed Friday night to provide the top highlight for the Jackrabbit men at the Iowa State Classic.
The distance medley relay team of Joe Roby, Dan Winders, D.J. Thompson and Marshall Kambestad erased a 34-year old mark with a time of 9 minutes, 57.33 seconds en route to a fifth-place overall finish. That time was more than 20 seconds better than the mark of 10:17.50 established by Don Larson, Rick Kiley, Jim Trego and Garry Bentley in 1974.
On Saturday, Thompson and Kambestad continued their strong performances by establishing new season bests. Thompson clocked a time of 1:55.41 to finish 19th in the unseeded 800-meter race, while Kambestad closed the meet with a 17th-place time of 8:25.97 in the 3,000-meter run.
Freshman Brandon Priebe posted a seventh-place finish in the unseeded 400-meter race with a season-best time of 50.65 seconds.
In competition at the Bison Classic in Fargo, N.D., on Saturday, Sam McInerney turned in a pair of top-eight performances in the throwing events. He finished sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 46 feet, 2.75 inches, and added an eighth-place throw of 45-7.75 in the shot put.
SDSU is scheduled to compete Feb. 22 at the Prairie Wolf Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
