TAMPA, Fla. -- The South Dakota State University women's swimming team won the 300-yard breaststroke relay en route to a runner-up finish at the Tampa Relays during its Winter Training Trip Saturday.
The Jackrabbits came in second behind host Tampa in the four-team field. Tampa tallied 188 points, followed by SDSU with 110. Cleveland State (Ohio) took third with 92 points, with Illinois Tech totaling 18 points.
The trio of Katie Budahl, Emily Tschetter and Kaitlyn Hemmingson combined for a time of 3 minutes, 34.07 seconds to win the 300 breaststroke relay, which was one of 10 relay events in the meet. SDSU placed third or better in nine of the 10 events, including second-place finishes in four relays: 300 backstroke, 400 medley, 500 SNARF and 400 freestyle.
On the men's side, the Jackrabbits finished last in the four-team field. Tampa swept the meet with 206 points, followed by Illinois Tech with 86 and Cleveland State with 84. SDSU tallied 56 points.
The Jackrabbits' best finishes were third-place efforts in the 300 breaststroke, where the team of Chirs Holzwarth, Ryan Willett and Quinn Holden combined for a time of 3:16.31, and in the 400 freestyle as Willett, Jason Garder, Holzwarth and Mark Sandager posted a time of 3:26.12.
Both the men's and women's squads return to competition Jan. 10-11, hosting Saint Louis (Mo.) in a two-day dual competition at the Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center. Action begins at 6 p.m. on Jan. 10 and 9 a.m. on Jan. 11.
