INDIANAPOLIS - Ketty Cornemann established season highs with 18 points and nine rebounds and Maria Boever tallied 14 points to cross the 1,000-point mark for her career to lead South Dakota State to an 85-77 victory over IUPUI in Summit League women's basketball action Monday night.
The Jackrabbits evened their overall record at 4-4, improving to 2-0 in league play. IUPUI dropped to 1-8 overall, 0-2 in The Summit League.
The two teams traded early leads as IUPUI held as much as a four-point lead on a couple of occasions after the jackrabbits built an early 13-7 advantage.
Boever's basket with 3 minutes and 9 seconds remaining in the first half not only gave the Jackrabbits the lead for good at 30-28, but put her over the 1,000-point mark as she became the 27th player in SDSU women's basketball history to reach the milestone.
SDSU opened a double-digit lead with a quick 5-0 spurt in the opening minute of the second half. Boever scored on a layup on the opening possession and Jill Young followed with a three-pointer on the Jackrabbits' next trip down the floor.
IUPUI would not go away, however, pulling to within a pair on two occasions, the last at 50-48 with 15:39 remaining on a three-pointer by Gretchen Gaskin.
The Jackrabbits methodically began to pull away again from IUPUI down the stretch, going up by 10, 70-60, on a basket by Cornemann with under eight minutes to play. SDSU built its largest lead of the night, 81-65, on a Kristin Rotert jumper with less than four minutes to play, but the Jaguars put together one last run to trim the deficit to eight before the final horn.
Both teams were efficient offensively as each squad shot at least 50 percent from the field and set a season
high for points.
SDSU finished the night an even 50 percent from the field, 31-of-62, including 6-of-13 from three-point range. The Jackrabbits converted 17-of-28 attempts from the free throw line, 60.7 percent.
The Jaguars ended the game 28-of-54 from the floor, 28-of-54, including 6-for-12 from long range. At the line, IUPUI made 15-of-25 attempts, 60 percent.
IUPUI reserves accounted for 46 of the team's 77 points, led by a game-high 22 points from Jessica Huffman. Julia Whitted, a preseason all-league selection who has been hampered by an injury in the early going, added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Jaguars. Briannica Tye was the lone starter in double figures for IUPUI with 18 points.
The Jackrabbit bench also was productive as Jennie Sunnarborg (13 points), Katie Lingle (9) and Cala Westergard (7) all set career scoring highs.
Young was the fourth SDSU player to reach double figures, scoring 11 as she sank three three-pointers.
Rebounding helped key the Jackrabbit victory as SDSU dominated the boards by a 42-26 margin, grabbing 14 on the offensive end. The Jackrabbits also committed a season-low 14 turnovers.
SDSU will play non-conference games for the remainder of December, starting Sunday at home against Middle Tennessee State. Tipoff is slated for noon at Frost Arena.
