FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Just two weeks after falling to IPFW in three sets at Frost Arena, the South Dakota State volleyball team took the defending Summit League Champions to five sets on Friday in Fort Wayne, Ind., but came up short in the deciding set the fall 3-2.
The Jackrabbits lost by the set scores of 17-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25 and 9-15 to fall to 8-11 on the season overall, 4-6 in The Summit League. IPFW improves to 13-8 overall and 8-2 in league play.
Ellyce Youngren led the Jackrabbits with 17 kills in the loss and added 10 digs to complete the double-double. Kelli Fiegen added 13 kills in the loss, and recorded nine total blocks, including five solo. Kaitlin Klingemann pitched in with 10 kills.
Thyele Rechatiko finished the match with 49 set assists and completed her double-double with 15 digs.
Mayara Schlindwein led IPFW with a match-high 26 kills, Stephanie Lamberti, Tessa McGill and Megan Steenhuysen all finished with 10 kills for the Mastodons in the win.
After IPFW rolled to a first set win, the Jackrabbits battled through a total of 20 ties and eight lead changed in the second and third sets to win both of them 25-23.
The 'Dons returned the favor in the fourth set by the same 25-23 score and then rolled to the fifth set win.
The Jackrabbits try to salvage a weekend split on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET, when the travel to Rochester, Mich., to take on Oakland, who downed Summit League favorite North Dakota State on Friday in five sets.
