KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Just like they did last weekend, the Jackrabbit followed a five set win with a three set win, as South Dakota State downed UMKC 3-0 on Saturday to sweep the season series and keep its Summit League Tournament hopes alive an kicking.
"We continue to play with passion and with a purpose," head
coach Nanabah Allison-Brewer said after the win. "Our passing improved
throughout the match, which enabled us to get our offensive production up,
which fired up the defense, leading us to a solid win. We're playing as a team
right now, and the players are really feeding off of each others success."
Ellyce Youngren led the Jacks to their fourth straight win with 13 kills and hit .545 for the match (13-1-22). She also added 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.
Kelli Fiegen hit .474 with 11 kills, two errors and 19 attacks in the win, and added a solo block and three block assists.
Thyele Rechatiko led the way for the SDSU hitters with 35 set assists and added 10 digs for her team-high 14th double-double of the season.
Demetria Williams led UMKC with nine kills. Nicole Kerkman and Kelsey Knoche tied for team-high honors with 11 digs each.
The Jacks fell behind by as many as six points in the opening set, but rattled off a 10-1 run to go up 17-14 and led the rest of the way in the closest set of the night.
UMKC hung around until midway through the second set, when the Jacks used an 8-1 run to go up 24-17, before eventually winning the set 25-19.
The Kangaroos led early in the final set of the night, but down 8-6, the Jacks went on a 7-1 run to take a 13-10 lead, and then put the match away with a 5-0 run that ended with SDSU up 18-11.
The Jackrabbits return home for the remainder of the regular season, starting on Tuesday, when the Jacks host South Dakota in Frost Arena at 7 p.m.
