The 2010 season started perfectly for South Dakota State with three wins at the Air Force Invitational last weekend, but the test gets tougher this weekend when the Jackrabbits travel to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Challenge.
The Jacks open the tournament on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Florida International, who received votes in this week's AVCA Coaches Top-25 Coaches Poll. The test only gets tougher on Saturday at 11 a.m., when the Jacks play the host Cyclones, who fell from No. 9 to No. 12 in most recent rankings. The weekend wraps with a match against Green Bay on Sunday at 1 p.m.
This weekend marks the first meeting between the Jacks and FIU and but the third meeting between SDSU and both Iowa State and Green Bay. The Cyclones lead the series 2-0, while the Jacks and Phoenix both own one win in the series.
Ellyce Youngren leads the Jackrabbit offense after three matches with 57 kills and ranks third on the team with 33 digs. Kaitlin Klingemann enters the weekend with 28 kills and a 4.15 hitting percentage (28-6-53). Kelli Fiegen ranks third on the team with 26 kills, but racked-up 22 total blocks last weekend, five solo and 17 block assists. Thyele Rechatiko handles the setting duties for the Jackrabbits, while Shay Birath wears libero jersey.
RABBITS ON THE RADIO - All Jackrabbit volleyball home matches can be heard on KJJQ 910 A.M. The pre-game show starts approximately 20 minutes before first serve.

YOUNGREN EARNS WEEKLY HONOR - Ellyce Youngren earned the first Summit League Offensive Player of the Week award of the season after leading the Jackrabbits to the Air Force Invitational title and an undefeated opening weekend.
A Brookings native, Youngren earned MVP honors at the tournament after recording a career-high 26 kills and career-high 17 digs in the Jackrabbits season-opening win over Boise State. For the weekend, she tallied 57 kills averaging 4.75 per set with a .226 hitting percentage, 33 digs and six service aces, tallying two double-doubles in the process.
THREE JACKRABBITS NAMED TO ALL-T0URNAMENT TEAM -Three South Dakota State volleyball players earned all-tournament team honors after helping lead the Jackrabbits to a perfect 3-0 start at the Air Force Invitational over the weekend.
Ellyce Youngren, Kelli Fiegen and Thyele Rechatiko all represented the Jacks, with Youngren earning tournament MVP honors.
THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION
FIU Panthers (1-2) - The Panthers enter their match with the Jackrabbits after going 1-2 last week at the Florida State Invitational. The Panthers opened the season with a 3-1 loss against New Mexico State, but rebounded to beat Florida A&M 3-1, both on Friday. FIU dropped a 3-0 contest to No. 15 Florida State on Saturday.
The Series vs. FIU - First Meeting
No. 12 Iowa State Cyclones (1-1) - The Cyclones entered the season with a No. 9 rank, but fell to No. 12 this week after going 1-1 last week at the Runza/AVCA Showcase in Omaha, Neb. ISU fell to No. 13 Florida by the score of 3-1 in the season-opener on Saturday, but rebounded to beat No. 14 Kentucky by the same 3-1 score on Sunday.
The Series vs. Iowa State - The Cyclones lead the all-time series 2-0, with both wins coming at the Cyclone Classic and both by the same 3-1 score on Sept. 2, 2005 and on Sept. 9, 2006.
Green Bay Phoenix (0-3) - The Phoenix hope to find some better luck in the state of Iowa this week at the Iowa State Challenge after dropping all three matches last weekend at the Hawkeye Challenge in Iowa City. Green Bay fell to Southern Illinois on Friday and then lost to Alabama and the host Iowa on Saturday, all by the same 3-0 score.
The Series vs. Green Bay - Series tied 1-1. The Jackrabbits won the fist meeting by the score of 3-0 on Sept. 9, 2005 at the NDSU Classic in Fargo, N.D. The Phoenix beat the Jacks 3-1 last year at the Green Bay Classic.
NEXT UP FOR THE JACKRABBITS - The Jacks return home next weekend to open the home and Summit League schedule with matches against UMKC on Friday and Southern Utah on Saturday, both at 7 p.m.
The Jacks and Kangaroos split the 2009 season series, with each team winning on its home floor, the Jacks swept the season series with the Thunderbirds, winning 3-2 in Cedar City, Utah and 3-1 at Frost Arena.
