The South Dakota State volleyball team opens its home and Summit League schedule this weekend in Frost Arena, when the Jackrabbits welcome UMKC?on Friday and Southern Utah on Saturday, both matches start at 7 p.m.
The perfect start to the season quickly came to an end last weekend at the Iowa State Challenge, as the Jackrabbits dropped matches against FIU, Iowa State and Green Bay to fall back to an even 3-3 on the season.
The Jacks opened against the FIU?Panthers, who received votes in last week's AVCA poll, and took them to five sets, but came up just short of their fourth straight win to open the season. SDSU?lost to No. 12 Iowa State in three sets, but played the Cyclones tough in all three. The weekend ended with another five-set loss, this time to the Green Bay Phoenix.
Ellyce Youngren leads the Jackrabbit offense after six matches with 57 kills and ranks second on the team with 65 digs. Kelli Fiegen ranks second on the team with 61 kills, and easily leads the team with 38 total blocks, seven solo and 31 block assists. Thyele Rechatiko handles the setting duties for the Jackrabbits, while Shay Birath wears libero jersey.Â
RABBITS ON THE RADIO - All Jackrabbit volleyball home matches can be heard on KJJQ 910 A.M. The pre-game show starts approximately 20 minutes before first serve.

FIEGEN EARNS WEEKLY HONOR - South Dakota State middle blocker Kelli Fiegen earned The Summit League's Offensive Player of the Week award after turning out top performances against some of the nation's top teams at the Iowa State Challenge over the weekend.
A Parkston, S.D., native, Fiegen posted a .545 hitting percentage, only .005 points shy of the five-set program record, and tallied 13 kills with just one error in 22 attempts against Florida International, who received votes in last week's AVCA Top 25 Poll.
She later recorded a .321 hitting percentage with 13 kills against No. 12 Iowa State. For the weekend, she tallied 25 kills with only nine errors, good for a .351 hitting percentage, and 16 total blocks, averaging 1.23 per set.
THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION
UMKC?Kangaroos (3-6, 0-0 Summit) - The Kangaroos enter the weekend with a 3-6 record after dropping their home opener to Drake on Tuesday by a 3-0 score.
Elizabeth Beck leads the UMKC attack with 102 kills, most of them set from Ella Meier, who leads the team with 168 set assists. Nicole Kerkman leads the Kangaroos with 108 digs and Christiana McQuin enters the week with a team-high 18 total blocks.Â
The Series vs. UMKC - The Jackrabbits lead the all-time series 7-1, including wins in the first six matches and a 5-1 mark in Summit League play. The Lone Kangaroo win came last season on Oct. 1, in Kansas City, when UMKC erased a 2-0 deficit to win the match 3-2. The Jacks bounced back with a 3-0 sweep on Halloween in Frost Arena.
Southern Utah Thunderbirds (2-5, 0-0 Summit) - The Thunderbirds, who open Summit League play at North?Dakota State on?Friday, enter the week with a 2-5 record and riding a four match losing streak after dropping all three matches at the Drake Invitational last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, to North Dakota, Drake and Green Bay.
Analaine Pelaez leads the SUU offense with 87 kills, most of them set-up by Brittney Clark, who leads the T-Birds with 231 sets assists. Pelaez also leads the defense with 86 digs, while Cashaana Renfrom leads the team with 20 total blocks, 19 of them block assists, with one solo block.
The Series vs. Southern Utah - the Jackrabbits lead the all-time series 2-0 after sweeping the season series last year. The Jacks won 3-2 on Oct. 3, in Cedar City, Utah and won 3-1 on Oct. 30, in Frost Arena.

SDSU?opens the weekend on Friday at 4 p.m. against North Dakota, and then plays the host Bison on Saturday at 2 p.m., before wrapping up the tournament against South?Dakota at 7:30 p.m.
