The South Dakota State equestrian team rode to a 10-5 win over Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday at the DeHaan Equestrian Center behind a number of solid rides from underclassmen.
The Jackrabbits even their record at 2-2 with the win, while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-1 in NCEA competition.
“Today was a great way to open the season at home,” head coach Megan Rossiter said. “We had a chance to get some more of our underclassmen some experience today and they did a great job, with two of our three MOPs being freshmen. We now have to gear up for a challenge at Texas A&M next weekend.“
The Jackrabbits opened the day with a 3-1 advantage over fences, led by freshman Taylor Duerr, who earned her first-ever MOP honor with a score of 76 to even her season record at 2-2. Fellow freshman Alissa Greenwald carded a 74 in her first collegiate ride to earn her point, while junior Marielle Golden outscored the field with a 79 to improve to 1-2 on the season.
SDSU and UMC tied on the flat, but freshman Jessica Andronowitz earned her first-ever MOP honor and first win of the season with a career-high score of 75. Sophomore Natalie Howard picked-up her first-career win with a career-high score of 85 on the flat.
On the western side, Minnesota-Crookston's Chloe Nelson earned a point for her team and MOP honors in horsemanship, but the Jacks scored the other three points, with sophomores Victoria Johnson and Danielle Dickerson earning points, along with junior Sarah Bowen. Johnson's win evens her season record to 2-1, while both Dickerson and Bowen cracked the win column for the first time this season.
The Jacks closed out the win with a 2-1 advantage in reining, with freshman Mariah Wright and sophomore Makayla Reed both picking up wins. Wright, who also took home MOP honors for the second time this season, improves to 2-0-1 on the year, while Reed evens her record at 1-1.
The Jackrabbits return to action next week, when they travel to College Station, Texas to take on Texas A&M at 11 a.m.
