LAS VEGAS--The South Dakota State University women's basketball team used a 9-0 run midway through the first half and recorded a 55-42 nonconference win over Northern Illinois in the UNLV Lady Rebel Round-Up Saturday at Cox Pavilion Arena.
With the win, SDSU improves to 3-2 and advances to the championship against UNLV at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Jacks, who snapped a three-game neutral site losing streak, were led by sophomore Chynna Stevens (Clark) and her game-high 13 points. Classmate Kerri Young (Mitchell) added 12 points and dished a career-tying six assists. Nine Jackrabbits scored in the game. Freshman Macy Miller (Mitchell) snared a team- and career-best seven rebounds to go with six points and two blocks.
South Dakota State limited NIU to 18 first-half points, the second consecutive opponent the Jackrabbits have held under 20 points.
After the Jacks erupted for their 9-0 run, they used a 14-4 run for a 31-18 halftime lead. NIU opened the second half with a basket before SDSU went on an 18-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 49-20.
Kelly Smith had a team-high 11 points and Ally Lehman grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Huskies, now 1-4.
