BROOKINGS, S.D. -- South Dakota State (1-2, 0-0 Summit) completed its opening weekend with a sweep of Saint Francis (Ill.) Saturday and a 5-2 loss to Toledo Sunday.
On Saturday, SDSU dominated from top to bottom as it swept doubles as Rosa/Magni, Davies/Souza and Haws-Lay/Gabb won 8-2, 8-3, and 8-2, respectively.
In #1 singles, Ffion Davies won 6-3, 6-2, while Iasmin Rosa won 6-3, 6-1. Florencia Magni and Tacy Haws-Lay followed suit with 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2 wins. Beatriz Souza and Elif Gabb also won in dominating fashion in #5 and #6 by scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-0.
"It was a good match for us overall," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "The girls did well and handled every challenge."
SDSU battled against Toledo and picked up wins in #1 and #6 singles, but ultimately fell short.
"We brought great energy today and will use that moving forward," Engdahl said. "If we continue to compete like we did today and get leadership from our upperclassmen, we are going to be a dangerous team."
Rosa continued her excellent start with a 6-4, 6-3 decision at the #1 spot, while Gabb continued to look strong with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 comeback in #6 singles.
Rosa/Davies also won #1 doubles, but ultimately dropped the point as Toledo won #2 and #3.
The Jackrabbit women return to action February 1 at North Dakota.
