2015-16 Season Opens Friday Night
Coming off its sixth NCAA appearance, ninth consecutive postseason trip and 18th 20-win season, the South Dakota State women's basketball team opens its 50th basketball campaign Friday when it hosts Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference member Marist College in the friendly confines of Frost Arena.
- The Jackrabbits, 24-9 last season, defeated St. Cloud State, 79-44, Oct. 29 and University of Mary, 85-40, Nov. 5 in exhibition games.
- Marist went 1-0 in exhibition action, defeating Holy Family, 86-66, Nov. 8.
Noteworthy
- The Jackrabbits are protecting a 10-game home winning streak, 25th-longest in the NCAA. The last time the Jacks lost in Frost Arena was Dec. 10, 2014, to Green Bay, 77-75.
- The Jacks are looking for their second consecutive season-opening win Friday. Last season, they beat BYU, 75-65.
- Friday's game is the third meeting between South Dakota State and Marist. The Red Foxes beat the Jackrabbits last year in Poughkeepsie and in the 2011 Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico.
- SDSU hosts its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference team and is 0-2 vs teams from New York.
Opening Success
- The Jackrabbits are 43-6 in season openers, including a 41-8 all-time record at home. They are also 9-2 vs. D-1 opponents.
- The last time SDSU lost a home opener was Nov. 14, 2012, to Creighton, 63-54.
Jackrabbits Debut in Mid-Major Poll
- South Dakota State is ranked 10th in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major preseason poll going into the season opener.

Newcomers Could Make Debut
- With all four freshmen and a newcomer seeing time in SDSU's two exhibition games, rookie Madison Guebert will make her collegiate debut Friday at guard.
- Forward Jessica Mieras, guard Sydney Palmer, guard Annabel Graettinger and junior guard Ena Viso also played significant minutes and could see action Friday.
- The last rookie to start the season opener was sophomore Macy Miller last season. She had 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in 23 minutes of action at the point guard position.
- How did some other Jackrabbits do in their first career game Megan Waytashek was held scoreless, but had three rebounds and two assists. Megan Vogel had nine points and nine rebounds while the Jacks' all-time leading scorer, Shannon Schlagel, had 6 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists.

- Sixteenth-year head coach Aaron Johnston's probable starters for the home opener are:

- Miller is SDSU's leading returning scorer at 13.7 points per game and top free-throw shooter, sinking 88.1 percent of her shots. Thompson returns as the Jacks' top rebounder, grabbing 4.3 per game.
- Four Jackrabbits averaged double digits in scoring in two exhibition games. Guebert led the team, averaging 13 points per game and shot 50 percent (7-14) from 3-point range. Thompson scored at a 12-point clip and grabbed 6.5 rebounds per outing. Young dished a team-best 4.5 assists while averaging 11 points per game. Miller was one of five Jackrabbits to shoot 50 percent-or-higher from the field and averaged 10.5 points per game. Ober grabbed a team-high 9.0 rebounds per game.
- The Jackrabbits shot 42.2 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from 3-point range and 64.7 percent from the free-throw line while scoring 82 points per game and giving up 42 in their two exhibition wins.
Marist College
- Marist returns three starters from the 2014-15 season when it finished 21-12 and played in the WNIT.
- Sixth-year senior Tori Jarosz is back after leading the Red Foxes in scoring (17.1) and rebounding (9.5). The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason first team pick also had 71 blocks. Against Holy Family in exhibition action, Jarosz had 24 points and 13 rebounds.
- Senior guard and preseason All-MAAC First Team selection Sydney Coffey averaged 12.6 points while sinking 48 three-pointers for Marist. She had 11 points vs. Holy Family.
- Last season, the Red Foxes kept the scoring low, averaging 63.4 points and limiting opponents to 59.3 points per game.
- Marist was picked to finish second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference behind Fairfield.
The Marist Series
- Friday's game will be the third meeting between SDSU and Marist. The Red Foxes won last year's meeting, 82-64, Dec. 21, in Poughkeepsie.Â
- The teams' first meeting was Nov. 25, 2011, in the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico. Gabby Boever is the lone current Jackrabbit to play in the game. She had 2 points, 2 rebounds and a block in 15 minutes of action.
- Marist is the only team from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and from the Empire State that the Jackrabbits have played.
