KANSAS CITY, MO. — The South Dakota State women's tennis team toppled Rockhurst, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Loyola Park Tennis Courts.
"Overall today was a good day," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "We really wanted to focus on our positivity and intensity with Summit League matches starting next week. We had great spurts of energy and focus, but we need to make sure we keep the doing the right things even when we are losing points. We are very close to where we want to be next week and I believe we will get there after tomorrow's matches."
The Jackrabbits won every singles match completed in straight sets. At first singles, Iasmin Rosa defeated Emma Schelble, 6-3, 6-4. Playing at second singles for only the third time this season, Florencia Magni picked up her second win, besting Fabi Juarez, 6-2, 6-0.
Ffion Davies won the first game of her third-singles match against Ana Tamara Santos, 6-2, and tallied the victory when Santos retired shortly into the second game. At fourth singles, Beatriz Souza topped Alex Schelble, 6-4, 6-0, while Tacy Haws-Lay claimed a commanding 6-0, 6-0 win over Kim Vrugteveen at fifth singles. In only her fourth singles match of the spring season, Tiffany Filipovich earned her third victory, handily defeating Maddy Kayser, 6-2, 6-0 at sixth singles.
South Dakota State also won every doubles match. Rosa and Davies teamed to win their seventh first doubles match of the season, 8-5. Haws-Lay and Souza scored an 8-3 victory at second doubles while Magni and Elif Gabb won, 8-2, at third doubles.
This is the third time the Jackrabbits blanked their opponent this season. South Dakota State topped Saint Francis Jan. 24 and Tennessee State Mar. 10 by the same score.
The Jackrabbits return to action tomorrow when they face Missouri Western at 2 p.m.
