ST. JOSEPH, MO. — In its last match before Summit League action begins, the South Dakota State women's tennis team topped Missouri Western, 6-1, to run its win streak to a season-long five games Saturday afternoon.
"We got off to a sluggish start in doubles and I think they surprised us a bit,” head coach Michael Engdahl said. “We bounced back well, and our energy and effort in singles was perfect. If we bring the intensity we had in singles the rest of the season we are going to be in great shape."
While the Jackrabbits won all three doubles matches, they went to a tiebreaker in each. But they quickly regrouped and responded in singles play, winning five matches in straight sets. At first singles, Iasmin Rosa posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sarah Giraldo. In her fourth appearance at second singles, Florencia Magni picked up her third win, blanking Sofia Aguilera, 6-0, 6-0.
Ffion Davies and Tacy Haws-Lay won at third and fourth singles respectively by the same score, 6-3, 6-2. In her first singles match since March 10, Elif Gabb recorded her seventh victory of the spring season, soundly defeating Ceara Boldridge, 6-1, 6-0.
The Jackrabbits, who are now 7-5 on the season, open Summit League play Saturday, March 28 with matches against IUPUI and Oral Roberts in Indianapolis, Ind.
