INDIANAPOLIS, IND. — The South Dakota State women's tennis team opened Summit League play with a commanding 7-0 victory over IUPUI Friday afternoon at the West Indy Racquet Club.
With the win, the Jackrabbits ran their season-long win streak to six matches and improved to 8-5 (1-0 SL) on the season. The Jaguars fell to 6-7 (2-1 SL) with the loss.
"I could not be more proud of the girls today," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Every single girl on the team earned their win and played phenomenal tennis. The fight was there; the intensity was there; the passion was there. If we can keep producing those three things at a high level, we are going to be a dangerous team throughout Summit League play. Now we need to regroup and be ready for another tough match tomorrow morning."
The Jackrabbits won two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. At first doubles, Iasmin Rosa and Ffion Davies toppled Valeriia Lavrenchuk and Samantha Mayer, 8-3. Florencia Magni and Elif Gabb defeated Rachael Bridegroom and Bobbi Modesto, 8-5, at third doubles.
South Dakota State won every singles match, with all but two going to a decisive third set. Magni bested Abbey Neff, 6-4, 6-2, at second singles while Beatriz Souza claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bridegroom at fifth singles.
The other three Jackrabbits came from behind to win after dropping their first set. At first singles, Rosa lost the first set to Lavrenchuk, 6-4, but rallied to win the next two by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Davies dropped her first set, 7-5, to Modesto but then swept the next two in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-2, to score the win at third singles. After falling, 6-2, in the first sixth-singles set to Rachel Swartwood, Gabb won the next two, 6-3, 6-1.
This is the fourth time the Jackrabbits blanked their opponent this season. South Dakota State last topped a Summit League foe, 7-0, April 18, 2013 against Western Illinois in Denver, Colo.
The Jackrabbits will look to win their seventh-straight match tomorrow when they take on Oral Roberts at 9 a.m.
