NASHVILLE, TENN. — The South Dakota State women's tennis team won five of six singles matches and earned the doubles point en route to a 6-1 win over Belmont Saturday evening at the Brentwood Swim and Tennis Club.
"Today was one of the best matches we played all year," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Our focus was great the entire match, and we were able to overcome some moments we struggled with earlier in the season. It was the perfect start to our spring break trip, and we will look to keep the momentum going to Tuesday."
At first singles, Iasmin Rosa toppled Laura Van Eeckhoudt in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Ffion Davies earned the point at second singles by coming from behind to dispatch Kendall Warren. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Davies dominated the next two, 6-2, 6-0, to score the victory. Beatriz Souza then picked up a win at fourth singles over Ann Lauren Fiepke, 6-1, 6-3.
Because the match had already been decided when they started, the fifth and sixth singles matches were played as eight-game pro sets. Tacy Haws-Lay defeated Jenna Krakau, 8-6, at fifth singles, while Elif Gabb bested Maddie Gilley, 8-3, at sixth singles.
South Dakota State also earned the doubles point on the strength of wins at first and second doubles. Rosa and Davies won their first doubles match, 6-3, while Haws-Lay and Souza picked up a 6-2 victory at second doubles.
With the win, the Jackrabbits improve to 3-5 on the season. They return to action Tuesday, March 10 when they face Tennessee State at 9 a.m. and North Alabama at 1 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn.
