BROOKINGS, S.D. — The South Dakota State women's tennis team topped rival South Dakota, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Hillcrest Park.
Florencia Magni's 6-2, 6-3 victory over Rymma Maslova at third singles sealed the victory for the Jackrabbits, who were hosting their first official match in Brookings since 2008.
"I am incredibly proud of the way our girls handled today," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "We had nerves for our first home match to conquer, wind to conquer and a hungry USD team to conquer. The girls remained confident and played good tennis in tough conditions."
South Dakota State got off to a rocky start at doubles but managed to record two wins to secure the point. At first doubles, Iasmin Rosa and Ffion Davies overcame an early 3-1 deficit by winning seven-straight games to topple Milica Pavlovic and and Yuliya Sidenko, 8-3. Tacy Haws-Lay and Beatriz Souza clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Alice Scott and Maslova at second doubles.
Victories by Rosa and Souza at first and fifth singles put Magni in position to clinch the victory and the point in the South Dakota Showdown Series for the Jackrabbits. After winning a tight first set, 6-4, Rosa dispatched Pavlovic, 6-0, in the second. Souza then handily defeated Scott, 6-2, 6-1.
"The support we had today was awesome," Engdahl said. "It was great to have our first home match since 2008 feel like home."
With the win, the Jackrabbits improved to 11-6 (3-1 SL). The Coyotes fell to 7-8 (3-3 SL). South Dakota State returns to the court Monday, facing Omaha in Omaha, Neb. at 12 p.m.
