OMAHA, NEB. — The South Dakota State women's team dispatched Omaha, 6-1, Monday afternoon at the Koch Tennis Center.
“Overall our girls had another great day of tennis,” head coach Michael Engdahl said. “We've had a long stretch of travel and close matches that can take a toll on us mentally. We did a great job of focusing on our matches and not letting the last few weeks affect us.”
The Jackrabbits won five singles matches in straight sets. At second singles, Ffion Davies bested Molly Matricardi, 6-1, 6-4. Florencia Magni toppled Jacqueline Baude, 6-3, 6-1 at third singles.
At fourth singles, Tacy Haws-Lay scored a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kenzie Hill. Beatriz Souza defeated Allison Johnson, 6-2, 6-0 at fifth singles. In the last spot, Elif Gabb swept Maddie Holscher, 6-0, 6-0.
South Dakota State opened the match with three resounding doubles wins. At first doubles, Iasmin Rosa and Davies toppled Michelle Lo and Baude, 8-3. Magni and Gabb bested Rebecca Stafford and Holscher by the same margin at third doubles. Souza and Haws-Lay recorded an 8-4 victory over Hill and Matricardi at second doubles.
With the win, the Jackrabbits moved to 12-6 (4-1 SL). The Mavericks dropped to 5-15 (2-5 SL).
South Dakota State returns to the court Friday and Saturday, taking on Fort Wayne and Western Illinois in the final weekend of action before the Summit League Championships.
“The girls earned a well deserved day off tomorrow before we hit the road again on Wednesday,” Engdahl said.
NOTES: Since their season-long win streak was snapped at seven matches April 4 by Denver, the Jackrabbits have won three straight … Rosa and Davies are 13-2 at first doubles and need two wins to tie Davies and Jenny Blackburne's Division I single-season record ... Magni has won eight of her past 10 singles matches to improve to 10-8 on the season ... With a record of 12-6, Souza needs one win to tie Rosa (13-3) for the team lead in wins … Gabb has swept four opponents by a 6-0, 6-0 margin.
