FORT WAYNE, IND. — The South Dakota State women's team dispatched Western Illinois, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Kachmann Tennis Center.
"The girls played some good tennis today and bounced back well after yesterday," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "The focus is now on the tournament at the end of the week, and we need to do everything we can to get ourselves mentally and physically prepared."
The Jackrabbits won three singles matches in straight sets. At second singles, Florencia Magni posted a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory. Beatriz Souza won handily, 6-3, 6-3, at fourth singles while Elif Gabb toppled her opponent, 6-1, 6-2, at fifth singles.
After winning the first set, 6-2, at third singles, Tacy Haws-Lay dropped the second, 6-3. But she rallied to win the point with a 10-6 super tiebreak victory in the third set.
South Dakota State also won the doubles point behind an 8-5 first doubles win by Iasmin Rosa and Ffion Davies and an injury forefit at third doubles. Western Illinois also conceded sixth singles due to injury.
The Jackrabbits finished the regular season 13-7 (5-2 SL). They earned the third seed in the Summit League Tournament and will face sixth-seeded Oral Roberts in the first round Friday, April 24 at 4 p.m.
NOTES: Rosa and Davies are 14-3 at first doubles and need a single win to tie Davies and Jenny Blackburne's Division I single-season record ... Gabb leads the team in singles wins with 14 ... Gabb, Rosa (13), Souza (13), Magni (12) and Haws-Lay (11) reached the double digits in singles wins through the regular season ... Magni is 9-1 in her last 10 singles matches and posted a team-best 6-1 record in Summit League play.
