The South Dakota State men's and women's tennis teams begin Summit League Tournament play Friday at the Kachmann Tennis Center in Fort Wayne, Ind. At the 2014 Summit League Championships
The men entered the 2014 Summit League Tournament as the No. 3 seed after compiling a 3-2 record in league play. In the semifinal round, they fell to second-seeded Fort Wayne, 4-1. The highlight of the match was Parker Lawley's 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jonathan Raa at second singles; it was the first time a member of the men's team scored a point at the Summit League Championships.
After finishing the league schedule with a 5-1 record, the women earned the No. 2 seed, their highest ever in the Summit League Tournament, and a first-round bye. In the semifinals, they faced third-seeded Fort Wayne. While Iasmin Rosa became the first ever Jackrabbit to win a point at the Summit League Championships, dispatching Ella Norgren in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at third singles, South Dakota State fell to the Mastodons, 4-1.
South Dakota State vs. Oral Roberts: A Look At the Series
The Jackrabbits swept the Golden Eagles during the regular season. The men scored a hard-fought 4-3 victory March 29 while the women cruised to a 6-1 win March 28.
Lawley's victory at third singles propelled the men past Oral Roberts. After the senior topped Jan Pehnec, 6-3, in their first set, the Golden Eagle rallied to force a tiebreaker in the second. With the match on the line, tied at three apiece, Lawley dispatched Pehnec in the tiebreaker, 7-4, to secure the Jackrabbits' first Summit League win of the season.
The women won four singles matches in straight sets and swept the doubles matches en route to their 6-1 victory over the Golden Eagles. With that win, the Jackrabbits extended their win streak to a season-long seven games.
Since South Dakota State joined the Summit League in 2008, the men are 3-4 and the women are 1-5 against the Golden Eagles. The teams have never met in the Summit League Tournament.
During Oral Roberts's first stint in the league, from 1998 and 2012, the men and women both won nine tournament titles. The Jackrabbits have never advanced past the semifinals.
Jackrabbits To Watch
Lawley and Lovro Curcija are riding five-match win streaks into the Summit League Tournament. The duo tied for the team lead in singles wins through the regular season, each going 14-7. Lawley has teamed with Andrea Boglic to form a formidable first doubles pairing that boasts a 15-5 record.
Rosa has been a consistent force at first singles over the course of the season, posting a 10-4 record in that slot. Florencia Magni has impressed down the stretch, going 9-1 in her last 10 singles matches and 6-1 in league singles action. At doubles, Rosa and Ffion Davies sit at 14-3 overall and need one win to tie Davies and Jenny Blackburne's Division I single-season record.
