DENVER, COLO. — The South Dakota State men's tennis team rebounded from a difficult loss to No. 40 Denver with a 5-2 win over Metro State Sunday afternoon at the Regency Athletic Complex.
"We did what we needed to do today, but we were hoping for a bit more of a positive spark coming off a conference loss," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "We need to make sure we stay focused on the positives over the next three weeks and give ourselves no reason to doubt ourselves."
Playing at second singles for only the third time this season, Parker Lawley scored his first win in convincing fashion, besting John Qualls, 6-2, 6-0. Lovro Curcija blanked Calum Hayes at third singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Mateus Moreira topped Sam Stember at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-3. Gary Notkin posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Trevor Jones at fifth singles.
The Jackrabbits won the doubles point on the strength of wins at second and third doubles. Notkin and Jonny Higham combined to dispath Hayes and Qualls, 8-3, at second doubles while Moreira and Henrique Pereira won a nail-biter against Ludvig Henrikson and Stember, 8-6, at third doubles.
With the win, the Jackrabbits improve to 11-8 (1-2 SL). They return to the court Sunday, April 12 when they travel to Omaha, Neb. to square off against Creighton.
