VERMILLION, S.D.—Feb. 20, 2016—Despite a game-high 21 points by sophomore Ellie Thompson, the South Dakota State University women's basketball team suffered an 80-75 loss to South Dakota Saturday afternoon in front of 3,612 fans at the DakotaDome.
Freshman guard Madison Guebert (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field with three 3-pointers. Senior guard/forward Gabrielle Boever (Worthington, Minn.) came off the bench for 12 points, team-high 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Sophomore guard Macy Miller (Mitchell) netted 11 points and 5 assists.
South Dakota, 22-5, 13-1, was led by Nicole Seekamp with 21 points, Kelly Stewart and Abigail Fogg with 13 points each and Kate Liveringhouse added 12.
After taking a one-point lead, 35-34, on a Thompson layup to open the second half, South Dakota used an 8-0 run to take a 42-35 lead at 4:56. The Coyotes took an 11-point lead twice in the quarter before Guebert sank a jumper with 47 seconds left to cut it to nine, 52-43.
A 13-4 run with 3-pointers from Boever and Guebert, a layup and 3-pointer by junior forward Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) and a Miller layup cut the lead to three, 59-56, at 7:17.
Miller and Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) combined for eight points to cut the lead to 72-67 with 1:22 remaining. Seekamp, who made 7 of 8 free throws in the final 1:03, went 1 of 2 at the line and Guebert sank two free throws to make it 73-69 with 50 seconds left. After a Miller jumper and a pair of Seekamp free throws, junior Kerri Young (Mitchell) sank a 3-pointer with 31 second left to make it a one-point game, 75-74.
The Jackrabbits had a chance to tie the game at 78 with 21 seconds left, but two Miller 3-point attempts missed. USD sank two free throws for the final margin.
In the first half, USD jumped out to a 12-8 lead on seven points from Stewart. The Jackrabbits responded with a 10-0 run to take a 16-12 lead on a pair of free throws by Guebert with 56.8 left in the first quarter. Thompson collected four points during the run.
South Dakota's Tia Hemiller and Abigail Fogg combined for 11 of the Coyotes' 14 points to give them a 26-18 lead at 5:28 of the second quarter. SDSU caught fire with just over three minutes to play when Thompson and Guebert sank back-to-back 3-pointers, Thompson made two from the free-throw line, and Guebert added a jumper and Ober converted a layup with two seconds left to trail 34-33 halftime. Thompson had 14 points and Guebert 11 in the opening half.
The Jackrabbits return to action Feb. 25 when they play at IUPUI at 6 p.m.
