VANCOUVER, Wash.—It was a long day, but the South Dakota State women's tennis team split its matches late Friday at the Club Green Meadows. After falling to Portland State in the first match, the Jackrabbits defeated Southern Utah, 6-1.
With the win, SDSU improves to 2-2 on the season while the Thunderbirds fall to 0-2.
"It was a long day of tennis and I am proud of the way our team competed. We had a dog fight against Portland State and to bounce back and play great tennis against Southern Utah this evening shows a lot of character in our team," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "It is still early in the season, so we have a few things to tune-up, but we are certainly headed in the right direction."
The Jackrabbits won the doubles point for the second time this season, winning all three matches.
Senior Iasmin Rosa won her second singles match of the season, defeating Veronika Rogova, 7-6, 6-7, 14-12 at No. 1. Rosa is on a three-match winning streak going into Saturday's match vs. Seattle.
Senior Tacy Haws-Lay has won her last two matches at No. 4 singles after downing Lisa Martin, 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Florencia Magni and freshman Morgan Brower also have two-match winning streak going into Saturday's match after winning their matches vs. Southern Utah.
The Jackrabbits are back in action Saturday at 3 p.m.
