BROOKINGS, S.D.—After playing 15 nonleague matches, the South Dakota State women's tennis team opens Summit League play this weekend and makes a trip to Missouri. The Jackrabbits play at Oral Roberts at 11 a.m. Friday at the Caste Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., and then plays at 11 a.m. Sunday at Missouri State at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
The Jackrabbits are 9-6 overall and went 4-1 in Orlando last week.
"I can't remember a time when Summit League tennis has been this competitive and this even. It is going to be fun to be a part of, and I know our girls are ready to play," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "We get a tough Oral Roberts team right off the bat with some new faces from last year. Just like every other team in The Summit League, they are much improved from last year and we are going to have to play a high level of tennis in Tulsa. It will be a challenge I know our girls can handle and I know they are really looking forward to it."
Seniors Ffion Davies and Iasmin Rosa both have seven- and six-match win streaks, respectively. Davies, this week's Summit League Player of the Week, is 10-5 overall, including 7-5 at No. 2 singles and 3-0 at No. 3. Rosa sports an 11-4 overall record at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and is 10-4 at No. 1 singles.
In doubles, senior Tacy Haws-Lay and freshman Morgan Brower are 8-2 in their last 10 outings and 9-4 at No. 3 in dual matches, while Davies and Rosa are 11-4 at No. 1 in duals.
SDSU is 3-5 overall in Summit League openers, winning its last two. The Jacks defeated IUPUI, 7-0, last year. The Jackrabbits have a two-match winning streak vs. Oral Roberts, defeating the Golden Eagles 6-1 and 4-0 last season. Overall, they are 2-5 vs. Oral Roberts since 2007-08.
The Golden Eagles are 6-8 overall and 1-0 in The Summit League and play at Iowa State Thursday. ORU defeated Omaha, 5-2 Feb. 27 in Nebraska in its league opener.
