Ryan Froom pitched six solid innings and the South Dakota State offense struck for six runs in the sixth innings as the Jackrabbits salvaged the final game of a three-game Summit League baseball series with a 9-4 victory over Omaha Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits improved to 10-20 overall and 6-6 in The Summit League. Omaha, which swept a doubleheader between the two teams on Saturday, dropped to 17-15 overall and 8-4 in league play.
Omaha grabbed an early 2-0 lead, scoring single runs in both the first and third innings. Alex Schultz led off the game with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Clayton Taylor for the first run. Schultz scored again in the third after reaching on a leadoff single and coming home on Adam Canigilia's infield single.
Maverick starter Corey Binger cruised through the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth.
Matt Johnson led off the fifth with a towering home run to right field to pull the Jackrabbits to within 2-1.
SDSU sent 11 men to the plate in the decisive sixth inning, scoring six times.
Phil Velez started the rally with a leadoff double to the left-field corner and later scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Jesse Munsterman delivered
Nick Smith with the go-ahead run with a solid single to left field that knocked Binger out of the game.
After
Matt Johnson sent a fly ball to the warning track in right for a sacrifice fly and a 4-2 lead,
Newt Johnson drove in two more runs with a triple to the right-center gap.
Newt Johnson scored the final run of the inning on single up the middle by
Cody Sharrow.
Omaha pulled to within 7-4 on a two-run single by Grant Suponchick off reliever
Greg Casper in the top of the seventh, but the Jackrabbits countered in the home half of the inning with a two-run homer to right by
Luke Ringhofer.
Casper ended up pitching the final three innings to earn his second save of the season. The sophomore right-hander struck out six – two in each inning.
Froom posted his second consecutive win after scattering six hits and working around six walks. He struck out five, while stranding two runners in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Omaha left 12 men on for the game.
Ringhofer,
Newt Johnson and Sharrow each finished with two of the Jackrabbits' 10 hits. Caniglia was 3-for-5 to lead Omaha's eight-hit effort.
The Jackrabbits return to action Tuesday at Minnesota. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Siebert Field in Minneapolis.
