Jackrabbits edged again by ORU

Noah Cummings went 4-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored to lead Oral Roberts to a 5-2 victory and a series sweep of South Dakota State in Summit League baseball action Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
ORU improved to 32-16 overall and 21-6 in league play. SDSU dropped to 19-31 overall and 12-15 in The Summit League.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Nick Rotola doubled on the second pitch of the game, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single through the left side by Cummings. Cummings made the score 2-0 in the third as connected on a Ryan Froom pitch for a solo home run to left.
SDSU answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the third. Zach Holt led off with a single and scored all the way from first when Luke Ringhofer singled and the ball was misplayed by an ORU outfielder. Ringhofer has now reached base safely in 42 consecutive games.
ORU upped its lead to 3-1 in the fourth, and the Jackrabbits could not come up with a clutch hit in the middle innings as they stranded two in the home half of the fourth and left the bases loaded in the fifth.
Tony Kjolsing brought SDSU to within 3-2 in the seventh with an opposite-field solo home run to right, but Golden Eagle reliever Grant Glaze would go on to retire the last eight batters he faced to earn his second save of the season.
The Golden Eagles put the game away with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Cummings led off the eighth with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Trent Shelton. Brent Williams added a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
ORU starter Cale Tims pitched the first six innings, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out two. Froom fanned four and walked four over eight innings.
The Golden Eagles finished with an 8-5 advantage in hits, including two by Chase Stafford. Kjolsing was the only player for SDSU with more than one hits, finishing the day 2-for-4.
SDSU closes out the home portion of its schedule Tuesday with a non-conference game against Minnesota. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. From there, the Jackrabbits will venture to Fargo, North Dakota, to wrap up the Summit League regular season with a three-game series Thursday through Saturday against North Dakota State.
