Veteran collegiate coach Joey Barnes has been appointed as head coach of the South Dakota State University men's and women's tennis teams, Director of Athletics Justin Sell announced Tuesday.
Â
"Joey Barnes is the right person to lead the Jackrabbit tennis teams to the next level both within The Summit League and on a national level," Sell said. "His extensive teaching and coaching experience, coupled with his strong recruiting connections and engaging personality, make him a great addition to our athletics program."
Â
Most recently, Barnes served four seasons as the head women's tennis coach at Upper Iowa University, where he compiled a 45-29 overall dual record, including a 33-10 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches. The Peacocks improved from a sixth-place finish in the NSIC his first season to back-to-back runner-up showings in 2015 and 2016.
Â
"It is an honor and a privilege to take the helm of the Jackrabbits' women's and men's tennis programs," Barnes said. "I am very humbled to become a part of the SDSU family and community, as well as to work with an amazing athletics staff and first-class institution. As a team, we will grow and strive for excellence both on and off the court — in the classroom, throughout our community and in all aspects of our lives. I will do my very best to continue the standards of excellence that have been established across all sports at SDSU."
Â
While still serving in the United States Navy, Barnes joined the University of Maryland coaching staff as a volunteer assistant for both the men's and tennis teams, starting in 1994. He was elevated to a full-time women's assistant coach in 2003, helping lead the Terrapins to NCAA Tournament berths in 2005, 2006 and 2007. He also served a stint as interim head coach for the program, which finished the 2005-06 season ranked in the top 35 nationally.
Â
In 2008, Barnes moved on to Florida Gulf Coast University as an assistant women's coach for four-plus seasons. While at FGCU, he helped coach five all-Atlantic Sun Conference performers.
Â
Aside from collegiate coaching, Barnes was senior tennis director of the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Academy in Rockville, Maryland, from 2002-07 and was assistant director of Tennis Dynamics in Naples, Florida, from 2009-12. He also has mentored players on an individual basis for four decades.
Â
At SDSU, Barnes will inherit a women's tennis program that has qualified for the Summit League Championship each of the last four seasons, including a runner-up finish during the recently completed 2015-16 season. The men's squad has reached the league tournament four of the past five years. Barnes replaces Michael Engdahl, who resigned in May to pursue other professional opportunities.
