Jacks' XC: Three Earn Academic All-League Honors

ELMHURST, Ill. - South Dakota State cross country had three members of the team earn Summit League Academic All-League honors on Wednesday. For the men's team, junior Kyle Burdick and sophomore Chase Cayo win their first cross country academic accolades while junior Rachel King wins her second one for the women's side.
King had a stellar 2017 campaign, coming close to earning the first bid into the NCAA Championships by a Jackrabbit, placing 10th (20:28.2) in the NCAA Midwest Regionals on Nov. 10. Her performance ranked as the best performance at the NCAA Midwest Regionals for the women's team. In the Summit League Championships, she won (20:53.54) the 6k race, earning Championship MVP, first-team All-League and claiming third place on The Summit League's all-time fastest championship winning time list. The time also ranks fifth on the league's fastest times in the championship race and the fastest time at the championships among Jackrabbits. It was the league's fastest 6k time of the season a she improved her championship time by 19.2 seconds. King won the lone Summit League Athlete of the Week honor for the Jacks at the Pre-National Invite.
The St. Michael, Minn. native, has earned her second cross country academic honor, winning her first last year. It's third Summit League Academic All-League award overall, winning an indoor track and field accolade last year as well. King posted a 3.847 GPA in Health Education and Pre-Occupational Therapy.

Burdick continued his success from the 2017 track season. He finished 16th overall (29:35.7) in the NCAA Midwest Regionals, setting a new Jackrabbit record for the fastest 10k time in the regional race. He finished second (24:47.2) in The Summit League Championships, beating his 2016 time by 54 seconds and placing him fourth on the Jackrabbit all-time fastest league race. With his performance, Burdick earned first-team All-Summit honors and placed fourth on The Summit League's 2017 season performance list. Throughout the season, Burdick won two Summit League Athlete of the Week honors (Oz Memorial, SDSU Classic).
The academic honor is the Rapid City, S.D. native's first cross country academic honor, but his third overall. He earned The Summit League Academic All-League honor in the 2017 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. He recorded a 3.72 GPA in Natural Resource Law Enforcement.

Sophomore Chase Cayo had a breakout season, highlighted by winning his first career Summit League Championship race while earning the Championship MVP and first-team All-Summit accolades. His time of 24:44.78 beat his 2016 league championship time by 1:04.8 minutes and placed him ninth on the league's all-time fastest championship-winning time list. The mark also puts him third on SDSU's all-time 8k times in The Summit League Championships and third-fastest in the league's 2017 season performance list. In his final race of the season, he finished behind Burdick at the Midwest Regionals, 45th (30:06.2). The time ranks as the fourth fastest all-time in Jackrabbit history at the regionals. During the season, he tied Burdick for the league lead in Summit League Athlete of the Week accolades with two (Roy Griak, Pre-National).
The St. Miacheal native, earned his first career academic all-league honors, posting 3.714 GPA in History with a minor in Geography.

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions.
Next for the Jackrabbit cross country team is the Summit League Athlete of the Year, released Nov. 30.
