The South Dakota State track and field team split-up to go to two meets this weekend.

Vanessa Lane traveled to Lincoln, Neb. to compete in the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational hosted by Nebraska.

The rest of the Jackrabbits traveled to Vermillion, S.D. to compete in the Dakota Realty Invitational hosted by South Dakota.

LINCOLN, Neb. - The highlight coming from Nebraska was the performance by juniors
Chase Cayo and
Rachel King in the 3,000m race.

Junior
Rachel King recorded her season-best time of the season in the 3,000m, posting 9:36.53. It's her second consecutive win of the season in the event, which is her fourth all-time. The St. Michael, Minn. native, was within 2.32 seconds of tying her PR, which is the school record.

Chase Cayo cracked the top 10 in his second 3,000m race attempt of the season. He is now 10th on the school's top 10 list by beating his previous-best by 7.53 seconds.

It was the first race for junior
Kyle Burdick in the 2018 indoor season. He notched a third-place finish, which is his sixth top-three finish of his career in the mile. His time of 4:08.41 was 0.29 seconds away from his PR, which ranks sixth on the school's top 10 list. He earned his personal best last year in the Husker Invite.

Krista Steele recorded a career-best time (2:10.98) in the 800m, improving her previous-best time, and the school's second-fastest mark all-time, by 0.02 seconds. She is still 1.67 seconds away from tying the school record held by teammate, sophomore
Oksana Covey.

It was Steele's ninth top-three finish in her career. In both of the 800m races the Monticello, Minn. native has raced in this season, she has placed in the first and third.

On Friday, senior
Vanessa Lane competed in the pentathlon at the Husker Invitational on Friday afternoon against athletes from five Big Ten schools.

The highpoint of the afternoon for the Jackrabbit was her shot put toss of 39-04.50, which won her the event. She also finished fourth in the 800m with her season-best time of 2:22.90. It was 2.67 seconds off of her personal-best time.

The Pequot Lakes, Minn. native, was within 478 points of claiming the fifth spot among 10 Big Ten student-athletes.

The top three scorers had point totals that rank in the top 25 of the NCAA Division I, according to the TFRRS.org list on Friday night.

Lane is ranked 63rd on the TFFRS.org list with her season-best score coming from the SDSU Holiday Open in December (3,560 points).

VERMILLION, S.D. - The climax of the invite at the DakotaDome was the throwing group setting more records and personal-best marks for themselves.

Colton Bender recorded his personal-best mark for the second weekend in a row. His mark this weekend is the new school record, pushing it to 66-06.50, which is 10.25 inches better than his previous-best and 11.00 inches better than second-best.

It was also the Rapid City, S.D., native's fourth consecutive (he's only competed in four meets so far) top-three finish this season, winning three of the events. It's his 10th career top-three finish and fourth win.

Abby Sudbeck has finally broken the barrier from sixth on SDSU's all-time list to move up to third. She increased her career-best by 2-01.75 feet to make the chart jump. Since the beginning of the season, her personal-best mark has grown by 5-05.00 feet.

It's Sudbeck's first career win in the weight throw and second time finishing in the top three in her career.

Mason Leiseth recorded a PR in the shot put, moving him up the school's top 10 list from ninth to fourth all-time. He is tied with alum Brad Alfred's 1978 shot put toss.

Jaymie O'Connor. She recorded her fourth consecutive top-three finish this season, which is every meet she has competed in this season. It's her eighth career top-three finish in just two indoor seasons.
