The men's 4x100m relay and 4x800m relays reset the outdoor school records and state collegiate records

The Jackrabbits split among two meets in the central Iowa region, competing in the second day of the Drake Relays and the lone track-action day at the Kip Janvrin Open.

DRAKE RELAYS - DAY 2
DES MOINES, Iowa - It's fun to break school records, but it's more fun to do it with your squad.

The South Dakota State speedsters were the first to re-write their record and claim South Dakota's state collegiate record.

The team consisting of junior Sam Zenner and sophomores Coby Hilton and Daniel Clarke came away with their third school-record reset in the 4x100m relay (40.12) in less than a calendar year, while newcomer Emmanual Phoulom-Smith wrote his name atop the list for the first time.

The Jackrabbit team ran stride-for-stride with a Houston squad in the opening heat of the prelims, finishing 0.12 seconds behind them with the overall third-fastest relay time at Drake this year. The group will have the opportunity to run the race again in the finals tomorrow at 3:16 p.m.

The exact squad ran the No. 2 all-time mark last Thursday at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (40.55) before seizing the old record from 2018 Summit League Championship-winning time and record (40.40) tonight, cutting 0.28 seconds off.

Last year, the squad of Zenner, Hilton, Clarke, and junior Landon Larson climbed the leader board starting at Drake with the No. 3 all-time mark in the prelims (41.47) and ended with the No. 2 all-time mark from the finals (40.94), just 0.03 seconds from the then-school record (40.91, set 2017).

On the first weekend in May, the speedsters broke through the record by resetting it at 40.84 seconds at the Nebraska Invitational. But the squad wasn't finished, resetting it yet again in the outdoor league championships while also earning the league record as well.

With the time of 40.12 seconds, the Jackrabbits reset the state collegiate record by 0.01 seconds and are now ranked No. 17 in the NCAA West Preliminary performance list, with the top-24 competing in Sacramento, Calif. for a chance to earn a trip to Austin, Texas for the NCAA Championships.

Looking back, SDSU's mark would have qualified to the NCAA preliminaries each of the last five years and if it holds up, they will be the first relay team onto the NCAA DI regional preliminaries (worst seed times on the West Prelims start list: 2018 - 40.24, 2017 - 40.29, 2016 - 40.22, 2015 - 40.38, 2014 - 40.47).

The last event on the Blue Oval also claimed the school-record and state collegiate record.

In a time of 7:27.27, the men's 4x800m relay squad consisting of junior Wyatt Gatrost, senior Cal Lawton, sophomore Derek Boekelheide, and freshman Riley Bauer reset both records with a seventh-place finish at Drake Stadium in the evening.

Lawton ran the second leg with a split of 1:49.07 to move up seven places into third - a mark that would be the school's No. 2 all-time 800m mark - while Bauer closed the relay with a 1:51.46 split - a mark that would have been No. 8 all-time. The previous state record was 7:30 and the school record was previously 7:32.

Senior Rachel King highlighted the individual tab of Jackrabbit action, posting her second consecutive personal-best reset in the 1,500m to remain No. 2 all-time for SDSU and hold onto the No. 1 spot on The Summit League's performance list. She led a majority of the race but finished runner-up (4:25.12) to come within 2.31 seconds from the school record held by Becka Manshiem (2007).

Junior Haley Mottinger was one of the first Jackrabbits to climb an all-time list on Friday, posting a 0.22-second personal-best reset, her second of the season, to climb from No. 6 all-time to No. 3 behind teammate Jaymie O'Connor and Jennifer Stovall (2002).

At the beginning of this year, she had a personal-best mark of 14.73w (2018 NSU Twilight) and has since cut 0.69 seconds.

She had done the same sort of thing during the 2019 indoor campaign, entering the 60m hurdles all-time list at the SDSU Holiday Invite at No. 6 all-time (8.81). Before the start of the indoor season, she had a PR of 8.97, her only mark sub-nine seconds.

KIP JANVRIN OPEN
INDIANOLA, Iowa - Junior Micah Mather, along with eight other Jackrabbits, added personal-best marks at Simpson College.

Mather cut 4.39 seconds to reset his personal-best mark in the 3,000m steeplechase for his fourth career runner-up finish in the event (9:07.89). The junior is only 1.89 seconds from the school's top 10 list, a list that hasn't been touched since 2011.

The men's and women's 5,000m tallied five total personal-best marks for the Jacks as freshmen duo Thomas Breuckman (second, 14:51.10) and Lukas Pierson (18th, 15:28.73) were able cut 11.94 and 5.81 seconds, respectively.

Sophomore Cailee Peterson led the women (fifth, 17:56.68) while pairing with junior Emma Nelson (ninth, 18:17.04) to reset their personal-best marks for second time this season.

Freshman Blake Iverson scored a personal-best mark, resetting his best from the South Dakota Challenge by 0.59 seconds, while senior Rachel Propst added her fourth consecutive personal-best reset of the season by 0.98 seconds. In all, the senior has trimmed 7.26 seconds from her best prior to the season (2016 Jim Duncan Invite, 4:52.23).

Thursday - Senior Kyle Burdick attempted his first 5,000m race of the season, now sitting atop The Summit League outdoor performance list. The Rapid City, S.D. native scored the league's No. 1 mark of the season by 16.27 seconds, still 2.97 seconds from his personal-best and No. 3 all-time SDSU mark (his mark tonight would be No. 3 all-time as well), with a fifth-place overall finish (14:03.76) in the seeded race.

Burdick was the third-best college competitor in the race and helps the Jacks dominate the league's top-five 5,000m performers as four of the are in Yellow and Blue uniforms (1. Burdick, 3. Fr. Joseph Minor-Williams, 4. Jr. Micah Mather, 5. Jr. Lukas Nelson).

As of last night, the senior is also 49th in the NCAA West Preliminary performance list, one spot out of the top-48 that compete in Sacramento, Calif. in late May for a chance to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in June. He's qualified for the 5,000m race at the West Prelims since 2017.

For the women, the Jackrabbit duo in senior Emily Berzonsky (11th, 36:33.86) and sophomore Anna Donnay (14th, 36:58.24) ran personal-best marks in the open 10,000m at Iowa's capital. Both are within a minute of the school's all-time top-10 list (10th-best, 36:13.82), last entered in 2015 (Jenna Grossenburg).

Freshman Riley Bauer tallied the lone Jackrabbit win at the Distance Carnival in Des Moines, scoring his second career win in the unseeded 800m on Thursday night. Bauer scored the No. 10 all-time mark for SDSU to get the individual crown on the distance carnival night at the Blue Oval (won, 1:51.50). He bumped off teammate Wyatt Gatrost's personal-best mark off the list, which he added at the Mike Fanelli Classic to kick off the season.

Freshman Joseph Minor-Williams record his first 10,000m for the men at the distance carnival, 7.44 seconds from the school's top-10 all-time list (fifth, 30:18.34).

Sophomore Coby Hilton and junior Sam Zenner went runner-up and third in the third heat of 100m, becoming the first two out of the finals race tomorrow. Hilton missed the cut by 0.05 seconds and Zenner missed by 0.07 seconds.

For Zenner, the mark was a season-best by 0.09 seconds after opening the season with a 10.69-second performance at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. Hilton ran her third-best performance in the event for his career, short of his second-best mark by 0.01 seconds (10.57 in the finals at 2018 Summit League) and 0.08 seconds from his PR and No. 4 all-time mark (10.50w at the South Dakota Challenge).

Sophomore Oksana Covey posted a runner-up finish in the second heat that held up to be the second-best mark out of the two unseeded 800m heats. It's her fifth career top-three finish outdoors, first of the 2019 campaign. Covey's time would be the third-best all-time mark for SDSU if she didn't already have the school record from the Bryan Clay Invite last weekend.

Both Covey and senior Krista Steele added their first career 800m at the Drake Relays as Jackrabbits.

Junior Kendra Dykstra notched a season-best mark out of two attempts this season, trimming 0.66 seconds from her South Dakota Twilight mark. It's also her fifth career top-three finish outdoors in the 800m.

Sophomore Gabe Peters ran his third personal-best reset out of four attempts this season, this time trimming his mark by 0.80 seconds. He finished fifth in the first of two heats in the unseeded event.

Senior Rachel King, leading nearly the entire race, finished runner-up in the seeded 1,500m at the Blue Oval. She managed a 0.28-second personal-best reset, her second of the season (last weekend: Bryan Clay, 4:25.40 ... tonight: Drake Relays, 4:25.12). She remains No. 2 all-time for SDSU, just 2.31 seconds from Becka Manshiem's school-record mark (2007), while maintaining her No. 1 mark on The Summit League's outdoor performance list.

Among Summit League competition, he jumps to the top of the performance list by 16.27 seconds, totaling four Jackrabbits in the top-five of the event (1. Burdick, 3. Fr. Joseph Minor-Williams, 4. Freshman Joseph Minor-Williams notched his first career 10,000m attempt, finishing fifth in the open 10,000m among 22 other competitors. His mark was 7.44 seconds from the school's top-10 list.

Both senior Emily Berzonsky and sophomore Anna Donnay reset their personal-best marks, Berzonsky by 15.30 seconds and Donnay by 1.28 seconds.

It was Donnay's second career attempt in the event (first was in the 2018 Summit League Outdoor Championships) while Berzonsky ran her sixth, third at Drake (her best place-finish at Drake, finished 18th both times previously ... previous-best mark was from the 2017 Drake Relays). The school's 10th-best mark all-time is 36:13.82, last touched in 2015 (Jenna Grossenburg).

Junior Nick Wessels added his first mark in the Drake Relays as a Jackrabbit, finishing 0.17 seconds from his personal-best marks and No. 10 all-time mark.

O'Connor, who owns the indoor 60m hurdles record since 2017 and resetting it three times this year and re-established the outdoor 100m hurdles record twice this year (13.75, 13.74), was within 0.10 seconds of her personal-best mark.

Senior Peter Bates was within 0.17 seconds from his personal-best mark he first set at the South Dakota Challenge.

Junior Micah Mather reset his personal-best mark by 4.39 seconds, falling just short of the school's top 10 by 1.89 seconds, in his fourth career top-three finish in the event. The school's top 10 was last touched in 2011 by Greg Vollmer (No. 8, 9:05.54).

Sophomore Michael Schwinghamer added his second attempt of the season, missing his PR by 2.72 seconds set at the South Dakota Challenge, while senior Chandler Klawitter recorded his second season-best reset of the season.

Junior Jamie Schweiss added her first career 3,000m steeplechase mark.

The Jacks posted a school-record mark in the 4x100m relay alongside a Houston squad in the opening heat of the preliminaries. Overall, SDSU had the third-best mark out the round, second-best mark among "next-fastest" qualifying spots, to place fifth in the overall prelims. The squad was behind the likes of Kentucky, Purdue, and Houston, but were faster than Illinois, Northern Iowa, Iowa, Air Force, and Drake.

This is the second career 4x100m relay race that freshman Emmanual Phoulom-Smith has been a member of. The squad opened the season with the school's No. 2 all-time mark at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate last weekend (40.55).

A majority of the squad is the same from last year's two-time record setting team (Hilton, Jr. Landon Larson, Clarke, Zenner). Throughout the 2018 season, the men's 4x100m relay team added the second-best mark (40.94) all-time at Drake before resetting the school record at Nebraska (40.84) and ending with the Summit League Championship record and pushing the SDSU record for the second time (40.40).

Another combination of the relay team had the third-best all-time mark (now No. 4) at the Tulsa Duals (Jalen Williams ('18), Larson, Clarke, Zenner).

Senior Kasie Vollmer tossed the discus in her sixth competition of the season, representing the Jackrabbits for the second time at the Drake Relays.
