VERMILLION, S.D. - The South Dakota State track and field teams came away with 42 total personal-best marks from 32 Jackrabbits, including three school records and seven more top-10 all-time marks, and seven event victories from the South Dakota Challenge on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Jackrabbits found the school's fastest-ever 200m runner in sophomore
Coby Hilton, resetting the school's outdoor and overall school record on the Lillibridge Track Complex (won, 20.92). He crushed the 26-year old record previously held by Edmund Estephane (1993, 21.14) and is the second Jack ever to hold both the indoor and outdoor 200m school record in the same academic year (Estephane held both - indoor: 1994-2010, outdoor: 1994-2018).
Â
The Marshall, Minn. native has shown his speed since the end of the 2018 season in The Summit League Outdoor Championships, joining the top 10 at tied-No. 4 all-time (21.34w, had an illegal-wind PR of 21.21W in the prelims). Since then, Hilton reset his indoor 200m four times in the 2019 indoor season, holding the school record from Jan. 12 to Jan. 18 (21.30) and finishing with the school's No. 2 all-time mark (21.24, set at the indoor league championships).
Â
And the outdoor season has not been different thus far, already resetting his personal-best twice (21.33w at ORU last weekend) and owning the school's all-time mark - indoors or outdoors.
Â
But that's just half the story for Hilton on Saturday, as he moved up the charts in the 100m as well - now No. 4 all-time after cutting 0.01 seconds and winning his first career 100m (10.50w). He broke the tie at No. 4 with teammate
Sam Zenner on the list, a mark he earned in last year's outdoor championships (10.51w), after finishing the indoor season with the school's third-best 60m mark after three PR resets (6.85).
Â
Another event to keep an eye on Hilton for is the 4x100m relay. The Jackrabbits have yet to run the event, but Hilton was a member of the school-record breaking squad last year at the outdoor championships (40.40) with all other members on the 2019 squad and resetting their own personal-best marks.
Â
Junior
Jaymie O'Connor, like Hilton, is one of two Jackrabbits in the hurdles to own both an indoor and outdoor record at the same time as the Chateauguay, Quebec native cut 0.25 seconds from her previous-best (from 2018) and another 0.10 seconds from the 17-year old school record to claim her second career win in the event (13.75w).
Â
She has owned the indoor 60m hurdles record since 2017 (at the indoor league championships), resetting it three times last indoor season (to 8.50), and now out-paced Jennifer Stovall's 2002 mark (8.85). Stovall previously owned the indoor record for nine years (60m hurdles, 2003-2011) and outdoor record for 17 years (100m hurdles, 2002-2018). She still owns a share of the discontinued indoor 55m hurdles record (2000, 8.15).
Â
O'Connor also posted a personal-best and third-place finish in her second career 400m hurdles attempt (1:05.26).
Â
The final school record broken on Saturday in Vermillion was the men's pole vault by sophomore
Trent Francom (third, 17-05.00). He added another 2.25 inches to his PR, being the only Jackrabbit to pass the 17-foot plateau - and do it four times. He finished with the bronze, his third career outdoor top-three finish out of 11 attempts.
Â
Sophomore
Noah Huber came away with three personal-best marks, a team-high for the men, including the school's No. 3 all-time mark in the shot put (won, 56-08.75) and narrowly missing the lists in discus (seventh, 162-10.00) and hammer throw (11th, 168-08.00).
Â
In fact, Huber would have made the list in the hammer throw if teammate
Samuel Coil had not also posted a personal-best mark on the day (ninth, 174-07.00), finishing with the No. 8 all-time mark.
Â
Junior
Haley Mottinger competed in two events and came away with PR's in both, including the school's No. 6 all-time mark in 100m hurdles behind O'Connor (fourth, 14.26w). She also led the five total Jackrabbits in the 200m for a personal-best (15th, 25.96) - two others added their best career marks as well.
Â
Freshman standout
Addison Eisenbeisz elevated another two inches in the high jump to tie for SDSU's No. 8 all-time mark with Lora Shearer (2009) and earn her first career outdoor win, second overall (5-07.00).
Â
Junior
Amy Muller is now ranked in SDSU's top 10 for both indoor and outdoor pole vault as she reached an additional 11.75 inches to move into No. 7 all-time (sixth, 11-05.75). She reset her best indoors last season, finishing with the school's No. 5 all-time mark.
Â
Freshmen duo
Riley Bauer and
Tre Manning added wins in their respective events. Manning, along with sophomore
Daniel Clarke (23-00.75), went 1-2 in the long jump for Manning's first win outdoors, second overall (23-03.50). Bauer led the Jacks in his first outdoor 800m of the season (1:51.81), missing the top-10 list by 0.08 seconds (Jr.
Wyatt Gatrost set the No. 10 mark last weekend at the Mike Fanelli Classic).
Â
Senior
Rachel Astleford opened the morning with a personal-best mark in the javelin (third, 134-05.00). Her mark was good enough to climb to the No. 5 mark all-time - the first Jackrabbit in the top half since Amy Paulzine's 2012 throw (school record, 149-09.00). She was previously seventh all-time before her sixth career top-three finish.

15. Johnson, Sam (22.75)
Â

Coby Hilton resets the 26-year old school record in the 200m, previously held by Edmund Estephane ('93). He cut 0.22 seconds off the record and 0.41 seconds off his second PR reset (ORU Invite, 21.33w). Not to mention, beating the meet's competition by 0.50 seconds.
Â
The Marshall, Minn. native finished the 2018 outdoor campaign with a PR reset at The Summit League Championships, a mark tied for No. 4 all-time outdoors (21.34w). And after jostling with teammates
Sam Zenner and
Landon Larson for positioning on the indoor 200m top-10 list (holding the record for a week, Jan. 12-Jan. 17), he has now claimed South Dakota State's all-time fastest 200m runner - indoors or outdoors.
Â
Hilton joins Estephane as the only Jackrabbit to hold both the indoor and outdoor school record in the same academic year, as Hilton held the indoor record for a short time in January and now holds the outdoor record, and Estephane held both records prior (indoor record holder - 17 years, 1994-2010 ... outdoor record holder - 26 years, 1993-2018).
Â
The sophomore also notched his second consecutive win outdoors (two career outdoor wins), and his fifth overall win in the event (three indoors). He holds the No. 2 all-time indoor mark (21.24) while having the outdoor school record (20.92) and overall 200m record.
