MACOMB, Ill. - The South Dakota State track and field teams walked off Hanson Field with three post-season accolades, nine event crowns, and 25 all-league performers after the dust settled at 2019 Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Â
The Jackrabbit men finished runner-up (230 points) behind North Dakota State (272) as the only two teams to rally more than 200 points. South Dakota mustered the next-highest total (155.5), the only other school in triple digits.
Â
The men are the first-ever team in conference history (since 1983-84) to win cross country, indoor track and field, and place runner-up outdoors. Four teams over the 37-year history have won all three seasons on the men's side and 25 teams have won at least two seasons. Of the 25 teams to win two, only 12 (including SDSU in 2018-19) have won two seasons and placed runner-up in another.
Â
For the women, the squad finished fifth for only the second time in school history with The Summit League (2012), beating the next-best team by 52 points.
Â
JACKRABBIT AWARD WINNERS
Senior
Kyle Burdick concludes his Summit League Championship career as the only league athlete to win three Championship Track MVP honors, claiming them since 2017. He scored 26 points with a win in the 10,000m (31:16.94), a runner-up finish to teammate Minor-Williams in the 5,000m (14:35.17), and second in the 1,500m (3:50.45).
Â
He completed a four-time all-league career in the 1,500m (winning two, runner-up in two), three-time all-league career in the 10,000m (winning two, runner-up once), and a two-time all-leaguer in the 5,000m (runner-up twice).
Â
In all, he finished with 10 career wins for indoor (6) and outdoor (4) championships while posting his best performance in the 5,000m this year. He keeps the SDSU streak alive of winning four consecutive 10,000m, the second student-athlete in Yellow and Blue to win multiple times in the event (Burdick - 2017, 2019 ... Lusignan - 2013, 2016).
Â
On the women's side, senior
Rachel King was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Performer, voted by the coaches, as she finished her senior league championship season undefeated (winning indoor 3,000m, 5,000m ... winning outdoor 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m).
Â
In the steeplechase on Thursday evening, she completed back-to-back wins in the event by a 32.70-second margin-of-victory (10:09.85), still 15.41 seconds from her personal-best and NCAA's fifth-ranked mark (9:54.44).
Â
The St. Michael, Minn. native came back to Hanson Field on Friday to tally a 5.46-second win in the 5,000m (16:40.98), her best outdoor championship mark and 2.50 seconds from her indoor championship best (2019 indoors, 16:38.48).
Â
King is the first Jackrabbit on the women's side to win an outdoor post-season award in The Summit League.
Â
Freshman
Joseph Minor-Williams tallied a win over Burdick in the 5,000m on Friday after tailing him in the 10,000m (31:23.03) on Thursday morning to earn the Newcomer of the Championship hardware (18 points scored). He is the third consecutive Jack to win the accolade (So.
Daniel Clarke in 2018, Jr.
Bryant Courter in 2017).
Â
In the 5,000m, he ran a 1.82-second PR (14:34.98) to win the outdoor event after being runner-up to Burdick in the same event back in February for the indoor championship. He is the fourth Jackrabbit to ever win the 5,000m event outdoors.
Â
JACKRABBIT SPEEDSTERS
Sophomore
Coby Hilton helped the team score 30 points total (22.5 points responsible for) as he became the first Jackrabbit to win the 100m (10.41) and the 200m (21.04) while helping the team win back-to-back 4x100m relay titles (40.99).
Â
The Marshall, Minn. native was able to defend the indoor Jackrabbit sprint-event titles as he beat teammate
Sam Zenner by 0.16 seconds in the 100m and 0.17 seconds in the 200m. Hilton and Zenner swapped spots from the indoor season, as Zenner won the 60m and 200m (Hilton was second in the 200m, fourth in the 60m), being the first to win each of the indoor sprints.
Â
The speedster duo also owns both of their respective school records in the events, as Hilton scored the 200m outdoor record twice earlier in the year (20.92/w) and reset the 100m in the prelims (10.39w) -- once sophomore
Daniel Clarke's record from the 2018 outdoor championships (10.43w).
Â
Zenner has both the indoor 60m and 200m records.
Â
In addition to Zenner and Hilton, the abovementioned Clarke helped SDSU walk away with all three Summit League All-League positions in the 100m, posting a season-best in the prelims (10.65w) and resetting it again in the finals (10.63).
Â
Helping the trio in the 4x100m relay was freshman
Emmanual Phoulom-Smith, who scored a PR in the 100m prelims (10.93, ninth). The squad, who already owns the school record from the Drake Relays (40.12), is the second-ever team to win the relay event (40.99).
Â
800m DOMINANCE
As if squeezing all four Jackrabbit 800m runners into the finals of the indoor championships was tough, SDSU managed to put all six in the finals of the outdoor championships (Lawton, Bauer, Goehring, Gatrost, Boekelheide, Iverson).
Â
Leading the pack throughout the prelims and finals was senior
Cal Lawton (1:50.98), becoming the fifth Jackrabbit to claim an outdoor 800m title in the league. Freshman
Riley Bauer managed to score his first career all-league honors outdoors with a third-place finish (1:51.94).
Â
In the prelims, both Lawton and Bauer won their respective heats while junior
Wyatt Gatrost (finals - sixth, 1:55.58) and sophomore
Derek Boekelheide (finals - seventh, 1:57.17) placed runner-up in the heats.
Â
Completing the indoor and outdoor 800m sweep, for both men and women, was sophomore
Oksana Covey (2:07.93). She earned herself her first 800m championship by squeezing out a 0.26-second win and helped SDSU win all four 800m races this year (indoor - Gatrost, Steele, outdoor - Lawton, Covey).
Â
The Ankeny, Iowa native also kept the two-year women's streak alive as senior
Krista Steele won 2018's indoor and outdoor 800m and the 2019 indoor, the first two Jackrabbits to win the outdoor event.
Â
SCHOOL RECORDS
Along with Hilton in the 100m, two other Jackrabbits reset school records at the championships.
Â
Junior
Jaymie O'Connor reset her personal-best and school-record mark for the third time this season as she cut 0.30 seconds from her PR at the start of the season and added her second career all-league honor in the event (second, 13.70w). She came into the finals after winning the opening heat of the prelims (13.87).
Â
She was also a member of the third-place 4x100m relay squad (47.53).
Â
Sophomore
Trent Francom came away with a half-inch personal-best and school-record reset in the pole vault (third, 17-05.50) to earn his second consecutive all-league honor. His mark is tied for the 16th-best mark in the NCAA West Prelims and 23rd in the NCAA as of Friday.
Â
CLIMBING THE TOP 10
Zenner was the leader in climbing top-10 charts this week, tying his personal-best mark in the 100m (prelims - 10.51) and moving up to No. 4 all-time in the 200m (21.21) with runner-up finishes.
Â
Senior
Logan Ammons and sophomore

Â
Moorhouse, the 13th-best shot put thrower coming into Friday, placed seventh overall (46-00.50) for the ninth-best mark all-time.
Â
Sophomore
Noah Huber and
Anna Donnay came away with all-time performances behind Ammons in the hammer and King in the 5,000m. Huber became No. 7 all-time with a 12th-place finish in the hammer (178-03.00) while Donnay jumped to No. 6 with a seventh-place finish in the 5,000m (16:53.95).
Â
Men's hurdling duo in junior
Nick Wessels and freshman
Reid Pierzinski scored No. 7 all-time marks in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles. Wessels did it in the preliminary round of the 110m hurdles (14.41w) while Pierzinski ran his PR in the finals of the 400m hurdles (53.41).
Â
Both of them earned all-league honors in their respective events (Wessels - second in 110H, 14.60), with Pierzinski scoring in both the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles (400H - second, 53.41 ... 110H - fourth, 14.94).
Â
Freshman
Tre Manning led Jackrabbits in the long jump on Thursday by adding another 0.50 inches to his PR for a fourth-place finish and No. 8 all-time mark (23-10.00) senior
Peter Bates finished with the No. 8 all-time decathlon mark on Wednesday and Thursday (eighth, 6,052). Â
UP NEXT
Several Jackrabbits will continue their season beyond the league championships, with the NCAA West Preliminary round in Sacramento, Calif. on May 23-25 with hopes of finishing the season at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas on June 5-8.
