DENVER, Colo. - South Dakota State volleyball stumbled in Colorado Thursday night with a 3-0 loss to the Denver Pioneers. Denver won by set scores of 25-11, 25-22, 25-19 at Hamilton Gymnasium.
The Jackrabbits struggled to get things going in set one. Denver's first four points came from an SDSU serving error and then three straight aces. The Pioneers extended their lead to 10-3 before the Jacks managed to go back-and-forth with Denver until the 15-9 mark. From there, Denver surged ahead, outscoring SDSU 10-2 to finish the set.
SDSU responded with a 6-1 start to the second set with Denver committing four attack errors in that stretch. Denver began to close in on the Jackrabbit advantage and retook an 11-10 edge with four straight points.
Crystal Burk put down three kills in five plays to help tie the set at 16 apiece. Later,
Elyse Winter and
Sydney Andrews teamed up on the block for a 20-all score. Two Pioneer kills and an SDSU error gave Denver a 23-20 lead. Burk and Winter notched one more kill each but the Jacks could not go back on top.
Set three was another close contest until Denver scored eight unanswered to go up 22-15. The Jacks traded points with the Pioneers from there but could not dig themselves out of the seven-point deficit.
Denver notched nine service aces in the contest with six in the first set alone. SDSU did not have any ace serves.
Burk and Denver's Tina Boe led all players with 11 kills each.
Elyse Winter and
Chloe Stitt had six kills each. Winter also took part in three blocks.
Tatum Pickar paced State with seven digs and
Jasmine Weidemann and
Carly Wedel combined for 20 total assists.
NOTES
- South Dakota State was held to just 26 kills and a .098 hitting percentage, both season lows
- The Jacks are 12-7 overall and 4-4 in the Summit League

SDSU will head to Omaha Saturday for a match against the Mavericks. Opening serve is set for 3 p.m. at Baxter Arena.
