KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- South Dakota State women's volleyball pushed Kansas City to four sets, but ultimately fell, 3-1 (22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 22-25), Sunday evening inside the Swinney Center.Â
The Jackrabbits fell to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in Summit League play as Kansas City improved to 6-1 overall, 6-1 Summit League.Â
Crystal Burk paced the Jacks with 16 kills on a career-high 54 attacks. She added three blocks and eight digs. Tori Thompson and Akeela Jefferson tallied eight kills each. Carly Wedel and Madison Fay aided the offense with 26 and nine assists, respectively.Â
At the net, Sydney Andrews and Hailee Blau each posted a career-best five blocks. Tatum Pickar led the back row with 17 digs. Wedel and Brook Amann added 11 and 10 digs, respectively.Â
A kill by Thompson gave the Jackrabbits an early 5-4 advantage, but Kansas City tallied three unanswered points to pull ahead. The teams traded the next series of points, but the Roos maintained a 19-15 advantage. The Jacks went on a late 4-0 run that included an Andrews kill and three Kansas City errors, to tie it up at 19-all. The Roos outscored State the rest of the way to take the first set 25-22.Â
Kansas City scored the first nine points of the second set. A 6-1 Jackrabbit run cut the deficit to three, but that was as close as they would come as The Roos captured the second set by a score of 25-18.
State came back swinging in the third set, opening with a 6-3 run that featured kills by Jefferson, Blau, Andrews, Thompson and Burk. The squads went back and forth throughout the set as the Jackrabbits maintained a 21-18 lead. SDSU outscored the Roos 4-3 the rest of the way to win the third, 25-21, and force a fourth set.Â
The Jackrabbits held an 11-8 advantage in the fourth set. Kansas City tallied six unanswered points to lead 14-11. SDSU would come within one point of the Roos on four occasions but wouldn't see another lead as Kansas City sealed the win with a 25-22 victory in the final set.Â
