South Dakota State head volleyball coach
Dan Georgalas announced the additions of assistant coach
Merideth Jewell and volunteer assistant coach
Madison Fay, completing his coaching staff.
Â
Jewell joins the Jackrabbits after serving on the Louisville coaching staff as a graduate manager during the 2019 season as well as a volunteer assistant this past season. The Cardinals made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances with Jewell on staff.
Â
"Jackrabbit volleyball is very happy to welcome
Merideth Jewell to our coaching staff," Georgalas said. "Merideth is a passionate young coach who will contribute great technical knowledge to our training. She believes in our vision for our program and I know her competitive spirit will fit right in with our team culture."
Â
"I am so excited to join the SDSU family! I am super thankful for
Dan Georgalas and
Justin Sell for giving me the opportunity to advance my coaching career," Jewell said. "I am looking forward to contributing to the future success of this special team and staff. I wouldn't be where I am today without the support and wisdom of all my mentors. I can't wait to start this new chapter."
Â
Jewell began her collegiate career at Morehead State where she was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, and All-OVC honors, while ranking No. 17 in the nation in total attacks. As a sophomore, she was First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference and ranked No. 41 in the nation in kills and No. 12 in total attacks. After transferring to Kentucky, as a junior, Jewell appeared in 27 matches as the Wildcats made the postseason, where she played in every NCAA match and earned All-Southeastern Conference Academic honors. As a senior, she was a part of Kentucky's undefeated run through the SEC regular season slate. She was named All-SEC Academic that year as well.
Â
"Most importantly, I'd like to thank President Barry Dunn and Athletic Director
Justin Sell for allowing our program to add this coaching staff position," Georgalas expressed. "I'm appreciative for the support in growing our program and Merideth's skills bring great balance to my already talented staff."Â
Â
Fay joins the SDSU volleyball coaching staff after recently completing her career, playing as a setter from 2017-21 for the Jackrabbits.
Â
"Madison or "Maddie" is the last puzzle piece for our coaching staff," Georgalas said." We are super excited she has decided to join us as she completes her master's degree here at SDSU."
Â
As a freshman, Fay made an immediate impact, playing in 25 matches and 71 sets as she ranked second on the team with 379 assists. During her sophomore season, she started all 29 matches as she finished fifth in the Summit League and led the team in assists (837) and assists per set (8.05). Fay paced the squad with 5.82 assists per set and second with 477 total assists as a junior, while adding 113 digs and 12 service aces. During her senior campaign, Fay played in 10 matches and tallied 123 assists. Throughout her career she recorded 1,816 assists, 400 digs and 46 service aces.
Â
"As a recent SDSUÂ volleyball graduate, no one wants our program to be successful more than Maddie," Georgalas said. "She has a great rapport with our players and was always a great leader in our locker room. Her contributions to our sideline and our office are extremely valuable."
