The South Dakota State volleyball team prepares for the 2021 season Friday as it travels to Augustana for an exhibition match, before returning home to host its annual Blue/Yellow scrimmage.
The Jackrabbits and Vikings will meet at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls at 7 p.m. Friday. The match is open to the public with free admission. Augustana is requiring face coverings to be worn by everyone inside indoor spaces.
First serve for the Blue/Yellow scrimmage is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday inside Frost Arena. The match will also be open to the public with free admission.
There will be no live coverage for either match.
In just one season under the direction of head coach
Dan Georgalas, the Jackrabbits showed immediate improvement. The team finished 6-10 in Summit League action, doubling its conference wins from the previous season. The Jacks also finished sixth in the Summit League standings which was their highest finish since the 2012 season.
SDSU returns seven starters and eight letterwinners from last year's squad, including All-Summit League Honorable Mention selection
Crystal Burk. She finished the season ranking fifth in the Summit League in kills per set (3.74) and sixth in kills (213), while registering 10 double-doubles. Also among the returners is
Tatum Pickar, who ranked second in the Summit League with 5.32 digs per set and sixth with 303 digs.
SDSU opens the regular season next weekend (Aug. 27-28) at the North Texas Invitational in Denton, Texas. The Jacks' schedule features 15 home matches, including the SDSU Invite (Sept. 3-4) and the Jackrabbit Classic Presented by The Super 8 of Brookings (Sept. 17-18).
