The South Dakota State women's basketball team was voted No. 1 in the Summit League Preseason Poll released by the conference office Tuesday. Redshirt senior
Myah Selland was selected the Preseason Player of the Year for the second straight season while
Paiton Burckhard (first team),
Paige Meyer (first team) and
Tori Nelson (second team) also earned preseason recognition.
The Jackrabbits collected 36 of the 40 possible first-place votes and totaled 746 points in the poll. South Dakota was picked to finish second with 676 total points and four first-place votes. SDSU and USD shared the regular season title in 2021-22 with matching 17-1 conference marks. The Jacks are coming off a 29-9 season that concluded with a WNIT championship victory at Frost Arena.
Selland, back for her sixth season as a Jackrabbit, averaged 14.2 points to lead the team a season ago and added 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists on average, which ranked second. She led the Summit League with a 2.1 assist/turnover ratio and shot 51.1 percent from the field and 46.6 percent from the 3-point line. The 2022 WNIT MVP put up double figures in 22 contests last season. Selland was an All-Summit League First Team pick in 2021-22.
Burckhard enters her fifth season at SDSU. She started all 38 games last season and led the squad in rebounding with 5.6 boards per contest while ranking second in scoring with 11.3 points per game. Burckhard led the Jackrabbits in field goals made (175) and was second in 3-pointers made (45). The Aberdeen native scored in double figures in 22 games with a season-high 21 points at North Dakota. Burckhard was an honorable mention All-Summit League pick last season.
Meyer, a sophomore, started all 29 games prior to a season-ending injury. She led the Jackrabbits with 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals, on average, in her freshman season and ranked third with 10.4 points per game. Meyer scored in double figures on 16 occasions with her career-best 25 points coming at Mississippi State. She shot 52.8 percent from the floor and 53.4 percent from the 3-point line in her rookie season. Meyer was named to the Summit League Second Team and All-Newcomer Team in 2021-22.
Nelson is back for her fourth season at South Dakota State. She joined Burckhard has one of two Jackrabbits to start all 38 games last season and averaged a team-high 26.9 minutes per game. Nelson led the Summit League in field goal shooting, going 55.3 percent from the floor, and ranked fourth on the team in scoring and rebounding with 10.3 points and 4.2 boards per contest. She scored at least 10 points 22 times last year. Nelson was named honorable mention all-Summit League in 2021-22.
Along with Selland, Burckhard and Meyer, Kacie Borowicz (North Dakota), Heaven Hamling (North Dakota State) and Tirzah Moore (Oral Roberts) were named to the preseason first team. Jade Hill (St. Thomas), Grace Larkins (South Dakota), Elizabeth Lutz (Western Illinois) and RaVon Nero (Kansas City) joined Nelson on the second team. The voting panel included the league's ten head coaches, sports information directors and select media members.
South Dakota State will take on Southwest Minnesota State at 6 p.m. November 2 in exhibition action at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits officially open the season with Creighton at 7 p.m. November 7, also at Frost.
