KANSAS CITY, Mo. - South Dakota State volleyball picked up its fifth straight win and clinched a spot in the Summit League postseason Saturday with a 3-2 win over Kansas City at the Swinney Center. The Jackrabbits will make an appearance in the Summit League tournament for the second consecutive season.
After SDSUÂ went up 2-0 to start the match (25-12, 25-15), KC won the next two games (26-24, 28-26) to force a tiebreak set, which the Jacks won 15-8.
With the Jacks up one at 5-4,
Masa Scheierman put down a kill and teamed up with
Ella Thompson for a block, then Thompson recorded a solo rejection to make it an 8-4 game. Kansas City got one back on the next play before a 4-0 SDSU run made it 12-5.
Crystal Burk finished off the match with a kill for the 15-8 win.
Burk led all players with 21 kills in the contest. Scheierman added 13 kills while Thompson and
Sydney Andrews had nine and
Elyse Winter chipped in eight.
Katie Van Egdom had one kill on her lone attack.
The Jackrabbits recorded 26 assisted blocks and two solo blocks, led by a career-best 11 total blocks (nine assisted, two solo) from Thompson. Scheierman added five blocks, Andrews had four and Burk had three.
Jadyn Makovicka recorded 24 digs,
Raegen Reilly had 14, Burk and Van Egdom collected 12 each and
Alia Schlimgen had 10 digs.
Reilly gave out 45 assists, followed by seven from Makovicka and three more from Burk. Reilly had two ace serves.
Odyssey Warren had 19 kills for the Roos.
NOTES
The Jackrabbits have earned a spot in the Summit League postseason for the second straight season and the fourth time in program history. Prior to last season, SDSU had not been to the tournament since 2010.
UP NEXT
The Jackrabbit return home to host North Dakota Thursday and North Dakota State Saturday in the final two regular season matches of the year. SDSU will also recognize its senior class Saturday.
