South Dakota State volleyball has announced the hiring of Allison Mayfield as an assistant coach for the program.
"I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to become the newest assistant coach for the Jackrabbits," said Mayfield. "Upon arriving on campus in Brookings, I could immediately tell that South Dakota State is a special place, where big things are happening. That feeling was reinforced with every person I met. The family atmosphere of which the athletic department operates was so obviously apparent, it's hard not to be excited about joining a community like that."
Mayfield joins the Jackrabbits from App State, where she served as an assistant coach during the 2021 season. With the Mountaineers, Mayfield was primarily responsible for training the pin attackers and defensive specialists, a role she will also take on at South Dakota State. Prior to her time in North Carolina, Mayfield served as a volunteer assistant at Texas A&M from January-July 2021.
"Our program was lucky to have such a talented pool of candidates and Allison's resume immediately rose to the top," said Jackrabbit head coach
Dan Georgalas. "Her extensive playing career, both at the Power 5 level and internationally, will be a great resource for our student-athletes to learn from. She will have a great impact on the training for our pin attackers and liberos so I'm looking forward to watching her mentor those positions. As soon as she stepped on campus we knew she would be a great fit for the SDSU community and our program. She is an individual with high integrity and I know she believes in our vision that the best years of Jackrabbit Volleyball are right in front of us."
Mayfield was a four-year player at Kansas, where she ranks sixth on the Jayhawks' all-time kills list with 1,282 in her career. She also tops the single-season kills chart at Kansas, tallying 462 as a senior in 2011, on her way to all-Big 12 honors. Before joining the coaching ranks, she spent eight years playing professionally overseas with stops in Peru, Hungary, Greece, Finland, Switzerland and France.
"I can't wait to get started working with the team," added Mayfield. "I know Dan and the rest of his staff have done an incredible job getting the program to where it is now, and I know that the plan is to excel even more from here. I think my many years as a professional player will allow me to relate to the athletes on a different level, and hopefully in turn, will allow me to have a greater impact on the athletes and the program as a whole. I'm so grateful for this opportunity and I'm eager to get going!"
Mayfield a native of Overland Park, Kansas but is familiar with the state of South Dakota. Mayfield's sister and her family live in Sioux Falls.
