South Dakota State will host the Ohio Bobcats in the first round of the WNIT Thurdsay night at Frost Arena. Thursday's game will be the first ever meeting between the Jackrabbits and the Bobcats.
The Jackrabbits enter the tournament 23-9 on the season and have won 20 of the last 22 games. This is the 11th straight 20+ win season for Coach Aaron Johnston and South Dakota State. The team finished the conference season with a share of the regular season title at 17-1.
SDSU most recently fell in the title game of the Summit League Tournament, where Myah Selland and Paiton Burckhard picked up all-tournament team honors.
Selland scores 13.8 points per game to lead the balanced SDSU offense. She is joined in double figures by Paiton Burckhard (11.0 PPG), Tori Nelson (10.5) and Paige Meyer (10.4). Selland also contributes 4.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists on average. Selland has averaged 17.0 points in the back half of the Summit League season (the last 12 games) with six 20+ point games in that stretch.
Meyer is the Jackrabbits' assists (4.1 APG) and steals (1.2 SPG) leader. She ranks second in the Summit League in field goal percentage and assists and and third in assists/turnover ratio. Burckhard paces the Jackrabbits on the glass, tallying 5.8 rebounds per contest, and adds 2.2 assists per game. Kallie Theisen blocks 1.2 shots a night.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State will play in the WNIT for the fifth time in program history and first since 2017. The Jackrabbits enter the tournament 7-4 all-time in the WNIT.
- The Jackrabbits won the 2021-22 regular season Summit League crown, their eighth regular season title since joining the conference.
- The Jackrabbits are 23-9 on the season and went 17-1 in the Summit League. SDSU has won 20 of its last 22 games, most recently falling to South Dakota in the championship game of the Summit League Tournament.
- Six Jackrabbits earned All-Summit League honors. Aaron Johnston was named Coach of the Year while Myah Selland (First Team) and Paige Meyer (Second Team, All-Newcomer Team) were selected to the all-conference teams. Paiton Burckhard, Tylee Irwin and Tori Nelson were deemed honorable mention with Irwin being picked to the All-Defensive Team.
- The Jackrabbits are receiving votes in the latest WBCA Top-25 Poll and are 5th in the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25.
- Myah Selland is averaging 17.0 points since the start of the second half of conference play - the last 12 games. She scores 13.8 PPG overall to lead the SDSU offense.
- Paiton Burckhard is averaging 12.8 points and 7.8 rebounds since the start of the second half of conference play - the last 12 games. She scores 11.0 points and grabs 5.8 rebounds on average overall.
- Tori Nelson shot 63 percent from the field in Summit League games, which led the conference, and is 58 percent overall. She has scored 9+ points in 10 of the last 12 games.
- SDSU leads the nation in 3-point field goal percentage this season (39.2%) and is fourth in overall field goal shooting (48.8%). The Jacks are seventh in assist/turnover ratio (1.36).
- Tylee Irwin, Myah Selland and Paiton Burckhard have all scored more than 1,000 career points and tallied more than 500 career rebounds for South Dakota State. SDSU is one of just a handful of programs nationally with three or more active players to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
