South Dakota State led wire-to-wire in a dominant 87-57 win over Ohio to open WNIT action Thursday night at Frost Arena.
Haleigh Timmer had a career night for the Jacks, pouring in 24 points to lead all players.
The Jackrabbits advance to the second round of the WNIT and will host Minnesota Sunday afternoon.
Timmer's scoring output came on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor with a 4-for-5 effort from beyond the arc. The freshman grabbed eight rebounds, also a personal best, to go with three assists. Eleven of Timmer's points came in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the midst of an 11-0 SDSU run.
Timmer was joined in double figures
Paiton Burckhard (16),
Tori Nelson (15),
Kallie Theisen (10) and
Myah Selland (10).
Selland posted her first double-double of the season, grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds to go with her 10 points. Selland was held to six shot attempts, going 3-for-6 with two 3-pointers. She also dished four assists and tallied two steals. Nelson also shot at a .500 clip, going 6-of-12, and led the Jackrabbits with five helpers.
After building a 14-point lead through 15 minutes of action, the Jackrabbits needed strong defense to battle through a nearly five-minute field goal drought in the second quarter. SDSU only allowed five shot attempts by Ohio in that stretch and forced four turnovers to hold the Bobcats to just six points.
SDSU's 12-point halftime lead quickly became a 17-point game with a 5-0 run to start the third quarter. The Jacks went on to outscore the Bobcats 49-31 in the final 20 minutes, cruising into the second round of the tournament.
The Jackrabbits shot 52 percent from the field and 32 percent from the 3-point line, compared to 34 percent shooting for the Bobcats and a 13 percent showing from deep. SDSU out-rebounded Ohio 50-31 and had a 33-16 edge in defensive boards. SDSU also had a 23-5 advantage in assists.
Yay Felder and Cece Hooks scored 20 and 18 points for Ohio, respectively. Gabby Burris grabbed nine rebounds.
